OK ,i have now got an assistant for storing things but even with her both our inventories are getting full. How do you combine identical items? I have a number of dupblicate entries for many things. And I can't seem to be able to combine them into larger sets.....can anyone help? I could break them down but i am just starting my crafting and don't know what will be useful ....and I am hoping there is a simple way to combine things. Otherwise we will run out of room. Can we hire a second assistant at any time or do we have to wait for a certain level? thanks.
I see a button for Auto sort ..what does it do? how does it sort things?

You get two retainers. Combining piles of things is only possible if the quality is the same.. maybe the ones that won't pile are different quality? I'm sure someone else will help with the rest of your questions :)

Some of the items are identical like Animal Skins, and for some reason they wont combine. Seems silly I will try two retainers :) thanks for the reply :)

Make sure you aren't trying to stack animal hides with animal skins. Also most items have a mac stack size of 99. More than that and they make a new stack

No, he is right. Sometime the inventory for some obscure reasons splits the items in two (or more?) sets. To stack them back up just give all items of the same kind o the retainer and then take them back.
The day that they will patch that thing will be always too late. The inventory is killing half of my fun as a crafter. -

You don't need your retainer to stack things, though if you're already there with the retainer's inventory open, you might find it easier/faster that way.
To stack things together in your own inventory (or your retainer's inventory), just click the first stack to pick it up, then click the second stack. If the stacks can be combined (stackable items of the same type that add up to <= the stack maximum), they'll all go into the inventory slot that holds the second stack. If they're on different inventory pages, you can pick the first one up, switch pages (by clicking on the page # button with the mouse or using R1/L1 on the gamepad) while you're still "holding" it, then click the second one. -

wow, not sure how that can work if you have "picked" up the item wont the mouse be engaged already? i will try this tho, i hope it works, i like a neat and well organized inventory....have learned the hard way it is essential to good craftmanship in both virtual and real worldz. :) thanks again for the help, i will try this out.

On the first click, your mouse cursor will have the icon for the first stack attached to it, but it's still a mouse cursor. You can move this around the screen and still click on things, including the inventory page numbers. It's a little more difficult, since the item icon kind of gets in the way, but the page numbers are big enough that it's not a problem. This is also how you move things from page to page to keep some kind of sane inventory scheme going (e.g., all materia on page four).
If the items are on the same inventory page, I'm pretty sure you can also just drag one to the other (click and hold and then let go instead of click then click again). -

well i did see a button for sorting but not sure if it works or not, i am just trying to solve the first problem first, combining entries so that i dont have duplicates and triplicates taking up space.

The auto-sort "button" is a checkbox in the config screen somewhere. Don't get your hopes up. It really doesn't do very much.
Honestly... I actually have no idea what it accomplishes. I've had it enabled from the get-go. I do know that it only does whatever it does when you actually receive an item, but I couldn't tell you the difference between the behavior with the box checked and without. Perhaps this is why potions and food always go on inventory tab 3 (except when it's full)? My items do stack themselves, so maybe that's it.

My inventory is still a hot mess. Materia all over the place, crafting mats scattered around like whoa. -

No - Autosort works already (why would be there otherwise the option in the setting??). All you need to do is to activate it either with empty inventory or dump all your items to retainers after activating it and then take the items back. I does sort items for me (put different items types in dfifferent pages of inventory) but it's not really that efficient especially once you fill-up your directory. With the 2.1 patch should come more "advace" sorting option.

Oh, that will be great then!! Also if the retainers do not have enough space there is a second option which came to my mind: sell everything to a shopper and buy back. Just hope the connection won't fail in the meantime!!

It doesn't matter. It really doesn't. We now have more inventory than was ever available in either FFXIV or FFIX, by a large margin. Yet people still complain about how it's not enough. It doesn't matter how much space they give you, it will never be enough if you can't manage it.

i found that yes indeed the items do stack when they are identical so i spent a happy hour or so getting everything in order, thanks for all the help here. Much appreciated. I had confused HQ with regular in a number of cases. Had no idea there was that differnce with so many things. :D
