Attention Scholars: Always place your Fairy!

I'm sure every Scholar has noticed how often your Fairy will just sit idly by as you or a party member dies. The solution? Use the Place command. For whatever reason, if the Fairy is placed, she will immediately start casting as soon as someone drops under 80% and will chain-cast Embrace nearly twice as quickly as if she's on Heel.

Go jump into an AK/CM and give it a try. It makes a world of difference.

I use Embrace myself most of the time anyway. I prefer having the fairy along side me.

is this not common knowledge? seriously if you consider SCH you main class learning to MICRO your fairy is a MUST its a world of difference! any high level SCH that considers themselves good knows this! place, steady, and heel are the most important fairy controls period i don't even use the others.

place if i want my fairy to focus on a specific party member (mainly the tank) however the fairy will still heal any in its range if they drop below 80%

steady if i want to hold CD's for when i tell the fairy to do them ( this is better than obey because the fairy will still cast embrace as opposed to wait for me to tell her to)

heel when i want the fairy to return to my side (self explanatory, fairy in trouble of being hit by boss or you just want her to stay on you, tell her heel)

There's no such thing as "Microing" your Fairy.

You get very little control over your Fairy and even things like Steadying it do more Harm than good because you can't use Embrace without it breaking out of Steady so you lose out on overall Healing.

Placing your pet gives you little benefit and even the benefit it provides has its consequences, i.e. it has to move to heal targets away from the Tank. You're better off placing yourself in the middle of the group so the Fairy can hit everything with Embrace and you can hit everything with Succor and just spend the entire fight spamming the Embrace hotkey in-between all of your heals.

You guys are missing what I'm saying. It has nothing to do with distance/location. The Fairy AI behaves differently depending on if it's on Heel or Place. On Heel, it will often times wait 3-4 seconds between casting Embraces. If it's on Place, it will fire off heals non-stop with no delay until everyone is above 80%, and she will typically top people off since she will begin casting a second Embrace before the first one has even hit.

I rather just directly control my fairy instead of let her do her own thing. I'm constantly commanding her to heal someone; even if everyone's at full health, I'll tell her to cast Embrace on the tank as he or she is likely to get hit in the next couple seconds anyways.

This is seriously annoying, using Selene as much as possible, I have to constantly keep an eye on Fey Light to cast Fey Glow as soon as the first one runs out and she goes back to 'Guard' as soon as you cast one of those skills.

I have noticed this too. Seems by placing her, you completely shut off her movement AI and she becomes noticeably more consistent in casting heals, often chain casting embrace. I actually tend to use her more as a "heal-turret", simply putting her somewhere between the tank and ranged dps and adjusting her placement when needed.

Regardless I keep my fairy basically between the range DDs/myself/melees if they are on the back of the mob or whatever. Basically she heals the parties little booboos and I heal the tanks big booboos and we go along with our day. Sometimes I get her positioned well enough to help with all the booboos depending what content I am doing.
In AK Fairy does all the healing though because going DD and killing bosses like the wall before the bees spawn or the purple balls on the final boss makes it faster and easier as long as she is placed by the party during fights its okay.

Because I still see people posting videos of Turn 4 with two Scholars and neither Fairy placed (so the Fairys stand around doing nothing half the time).

If you check your raw HPS after a BC run with your Fairy set on place, you'll blow away WHM's without accounting for Shields. If your Fairys on Heel like a dumby, you're going to struggle to keep up.

Is a placed Fairy healing cooldown faster than a Fairy you order around ?
If not, I'd rather have her around me and she is not lazing up with me as her boss.

Sometimes I find it's much more effective to stay 'on top' of the damage by manually directing the faery to Embrace. This means that she drops out of steady and will blow her cooldowns unless you reset Steady between casts (easier now, since patch) but I find it's sometimes more effective. Oftentimes I am either using Phys/Adlo on one person while I instruct faery to top someone else who is between 71-95% health, or I am pairing up my Adlo with an Embrace which was manually instructed to be cast. You can also circumvent the range issue by manually using Embrace. If you know your tank is going to be taking steady damage from a boss, it doesn't make sense to wait for him to be at 69% to trigger Embrace; just have the faery constantly be spamming Embrace on the tank, even if he's currently at 100%. By the time it lands, he'll have taken some damage.

If I know I need to save Whispering Dawn, though, I do place the faery and put her on Steady. That's only in fights with AE damage checks, though. For single-target fights I'd rather manually cast Embrace.

Worth nothing that I only use <tt> macros, and never use mouseover. I do this because you can't mouseover Embrace, and I want to be able to manually direct it as a part of my normal healing process.

Target a mob, select 'obey'. Selene will now only use Embrace, you can activate other skills and she still wont spam anything else. Obey menas both faries will only use healing skills. (So for Eos she will still spam Dawn, so you need her in steady)

It's not that the cooldown itself is faster, it's that her AI will respond quicker.

Really ? When I ask her to cast, she cast immediately and I ask her to cast before moving so she is always ready to cast even if I move.
Never had a 2~3s wait.
And I don't like to have people at around 80% either :(
But I will try to place her and let her do her stuff. And if people die, I'll refer to this thread ;)

I think the placement of the fairy and managing the abilities only becomes important once you hit 50 and even then only from Garuda onwards (maybe not even Garuda tbh) and I think this is why Scholars who haven't managed their fairies are up for a steep learning curve because suddenly it makes a difference if your fairy does and AOE buff to you and the fellow BLM standing next to you or the tank just before certain moves.

I guess in the end of the day it comes down to everyone's play-style. Sometimes I agree that things get so intense that it's better to let the fairy do it's thing with rouse up and you spam Psy and Ad as much as possible.. it is also very situational... there is no "one and only right way" to play with sch and that's what is great about it.

While I do agree that when she is placed somewhere safe, the result is 10 times better (you can move around and she still focus on the tank) I don't agree for every situation

you mentioned AK and I hate placing my fairy during the Demon Wall
I will always keep her on heel for that fight, the 2 other bosses I place her.

For Ifrit and Garuda I also prefer having her on heel (because Ifrit pushes her and Garuda and the tornados change places all the time)

No idea about Titan, haven't done it

So don't place your fairy if it will involve having to change place every 10 seconds or recast her because she died. If there is a relatively safe spot near the tank, go for it.

I place Fairy on Ifrit as it takes so little damage and is quick to just drop back to the tank when it gets knocked back (btw you will experience this in Titan a lot, so might as well get used to it now)
on Garuda, 1st half I keep fairy near tank and dps (between pillars so it heals dps also when adds are being killed), 2nd half I heel it as you run around and everyone is huddled up pretty much anyway.

On Titan, I recommend to use the placement even though the pixie gets knocked back during landslide. Just drop it back there and remember to use Rouse, the fight is tough on healers and you need the pixie to help keep the tank topped up at all times.
Some people dont use it like that tho, they prefer to keep fairy for the DDs while WHM and SCH takes care of the tank... Again, it really is up to your own preference.

Steady maybe better for people that don't have a mouse/pad that they can configure. I am more effective specific a target, and I can tell it to heal one as I am healing another or have it double heal my target. With one pad key I mouse over heal and have fairy heal my target. Cool down doesn't change so embrace is going of the same speed.

As soon as I tell the fairy to heal something, it breaks the command(steady, obey and I believe place). Micro managing the embrace is much better then letting the AI choice it's targets, this is why you still see fairy's not on place. Since the cool down for embrace is the same either place or not, it doesn't work any faster for me. I am hitting the heal button as fast as embrace is up.

Now that the pet commands are off my GCD, I can add steady to the macro for my game pad. I need to test if it will cast embrace quick and then put the fairy back on steady as fast as it can cast it, without making blow its other cool downs for when I need it.

If by parse whore you mean "seeing how effective a job your doing so you can adjust and improve" than yes. If you're doing Turn 4 and a tank keeps getting killed by the double Dreads, seeing one healer doing 1/4 the other healer indicates that something needs to be adjusted.

The point of the thread is to point out that most SCH's are losing out on a significant portion of their healing by doing things like juggling Steady or keeping their pet on heal. But, thank you for your constructive words.

And you can still have her manually cast when placed. The difference, of course, is that the AI will auto-heal and react quicker than you could.

Let's say you're doing Turn 1 and the snake has split, and you have one healer per tank. Placing Selene in between the two will let her cast reaction heals as soon as someone drops below 80%, and she will spam it until they top off with significantly less delay than if she was Heeled. You can still be pre-casting Embrace on a tank to top them off, but you want to be able to throw down Sacred Soil, move around/etc with her keeping her full reaction speeds, and having her on Heel or toggling Steady causes you to lose this.

Finally, again, use Selene. There's no content that Eos's weak HoT or long duration Heal buff is useful for. If you're having any trouble healing stuff as a Scholar, than your issue is how your managing your fairy (and, if you're toggling Steady while keeping her on Heel, I've already diagnosed the problem).

While I appreciate your thoughtful discourse on the subject, parts of your claim seem to defy logic. I am in total agreement that leaving the faery placed will prevent movement and therefor not disrupt her Embraces. However, the AI only allows the faery to cast Embrace on targets who have around 75% of their health. In all instances where everyone in your group has between 76-99% health, the faery will do nothing. It only seems reasonable that by manually directing your faery to cast Embrace in those situations, more healing will be achieved than letting the faery sit idle, which is all her AI will allow her to do. Also, since the last hotfix, the faery can be fully directed during your cast times, eliminating concerns about slowing down the player's actions.

I'm not sure if parsing who had the biggest cure is a really good way to know how efficient a healer is.
If there are no mobs around while we are moving to our next target, I don't usually heal people and let the auto-heal works.
Sure, I can cast a big fat Physick for a better parse. Like DPS who used to use a big one hit Weaponskill on almost dead mobs in FFXI.
But we have better use for our MP, haven't we ?

See, this is the problem with people who only look at parse numbers and wave around their epeen. You are the problem.

FFXIV healing is different from WoW healing. It is not about getting large numbers so you can feel better about yourself. It's about delivering the right heals when you need them. If you are sitting there and lording your parse numbers over people as a sign of your superiority, you're a problem.

Putting Eos in one position and never moving her or moving her only in case of knockback is, frankly, pigheaded. It ignores the fact that the fight is dynamic. It is always moving. Sometimes, Eos has to move, too. Sometimes, Eos needs to follow you. Other times, the arena is small enough that she can be placed and never moved. A "good Scholar" will not plop Eos in middle of the room, micromanage her at all times, and then come on the forums to report how great they are. A "good Scholar" will look at the fight, look at the mechanics, and judge the best way to approach it for the team. After all, we're the job that changes strategy. We're not the job that lazily slaps Eos down or runs around with her regardless of mechanics.

If you remove your head from the rear end of your parse numbers, you'll actually find that management of Eos should depend less on how important you want to feel and more on situation. Place Eos if the fight calls for it. Move with Eos if the fight calls for it. If you're not moving, Eos doesn't need to be placed. You're not "helping" future Scholars by telling them what you do, saying it works and is a massive success, and then telling them they HAVE to do it or they're "bad" is not helping.

And for the love of all that is good, stop using your crappy parses to tell people how to play, hm? There's enough growing elitism without people like you dictating what everyone else should do to get a larger parse instead of being adaptable to the needs of the group and the fight.

She didn't actually say about 95% of the things you accused her of, to be fair. I think parsing is a valid way to see healing done in a fight, if the parse is read correctly. Say, over the course of a single boss fight, and if you look at actual healing done and not over-healing. If, at the end of the day, a parse shows that a healer is keeping the tank alive better than another, in all likelihood that parse has identified the healer with the best strategy. However, I do agree that looking at raw healing output (which includes healing done to players already at full health) is not an accurate way to measure a healer's ability. In many fights, a healer's DPS should also be taken into consideration - but parsing will show that, too. Parsing is just using data to determine outcomes. Complaining about parsing is like complaining about getting grades on a test. If you want everyone to get a smiley sticker and a pat on the back, then that's fine - but I suspect you will get better results by analyzing data and seeing what is or isn't working.

With the change that allows independent activation of skills between the player and the pet, there's zero reason to place your fairy ever again.

Put Embrace on the hotbar and control her. Yes, this means you lose precise timing on the other skills - but whatever. It's far easier to micro Embrace than to constantly flip your fairy stance while placing and moving her to avoid unnecessary AoE damage. Yeah, this means you are going to have hit two buttons at once - or in rapid succession...but I'm sure everyone is an experienced healer and doesn't balk at that.

With the change, there's no question that longterm throughput on a single target is now higher on the Scholar. Game is much easier now that you can heal multiple people without having to wait for a cast bar.

Until I'm given the option to manually define heal priority and % HP loss for activation I will not rely on any sort of AI. I can do it better myself.

While I totally agree that manually controlling the faery is best, I believe you will still interrupt her casts every time you move while she's casting, so it might still be best to place her during boss fights.

Extremely rare, if it even matters at all. There's barely a cast on Embrace anyway! I did notice that if a target is out of your range the fairy will move on her own to heal the target. Caused a rather embarrassing surprise pull on ADS last night...

I've definitely not noticed it when I'm moving in battles. Also, you are a healer not a marathon runner. You should only be doing very slight tweaks in movement. Keep it to an absolute minimum.

Rare or not, I'm interested in the best way to use the faery. You will also notice that she's got a really short range on who she will automatically cast Embrace on, and if there is an instance where you're distracted and not able to manually direct her (after all, we're talking about consistently hitting embrace every 3 seconds for an entire fight, which could be several minutes long) she'll at least backup to AI in those situations. I personally think the best strategy here is to place the faery near the group, but also to manually direct her heals.

Heals that go on the fairy are a horrible waste of efficiency. Much more so than the slight AI advantage you get because you can't pay attention to multiple things at once...

I somewhat agree - I find that dodging effects is a pretty iffy manuever as far as my faery is concerned. Most of the time, it seems like I escape the ground effect but she does not, so I'm not sure how effective running with your faery is, and you can always re-place her out of AE if you need to. Also, if your faery's AI is casting embrace, it is by definition not overhealing, since she only embraces targets below 75% health. My biggest concern is that if I get caught in a ground effect, I want my faery to be able to immediately heal me - but if I'm still moving, she can't start casting yet. Either way, we're debating a small difference in healing output, I agree.

In general, I agree with most of what you said. If the fairy is caught in a cast animation when you move to dodge an attack, then she likely won't make it. However, the less you move the less this problem will be.

Play with the assumption that you will never be caught in a ground effect, because healers just cannot afford to be screwing up like that.

I, personally, hate the 75% threshold. It's awkward. The fairy heals for 500-600 on a non-crit. A geared Paladin is going to have something like 5,500 HP, a geared warrior 7,400 HP. That puts the threshold at 4125/5550, respectively. You will have to layer a physick on top of that to keep the tank topped or accept a ~900/1300 deficit. On a paladin that means if a WHM cures on top of you that's an overheal. Pretty much the same thing for a scholar.

The fairy should help you spike heal or help keep people topped off. A 75% AI threshold is way too low for this given the fairy's throughput.

Note: Overhealing on a fairy isn't a bad idea so long as it doesn't pull from the tank. You can make it an aggro decoy / cushion the WHM pre-shroud.

wrong, the only attack that seriously dmg fairy are direct attacks, boss swipes, and major AOE (and even these rarely do heavy damage to her), I don't know why you think place is dangerous unless your placing her directly in front of the boss (which you shouldn't be doing). I place my fairy in coil (works perfectly) especially caduceus when he splits I focused one tank and had my fairy ACROSS THE ROOM on the other and plumes on titan do nothing to the fairy soo??

You just aren't right. Enough said. Basically everything after Titan HM will hit the fairy. You aren't on easy mode anymore. You got by from their relatively MASSIVE defense early on. Unfortunately, end game damage is equally massive.

Her true potential is *WAY* less than mine. There's just no reason to micro your fairy like that. The AI is awkward, thresholds totally static, and throughput sorta low.

Why the hell would you place your fairy vs. Caduceus? Her manual range is easily long enough to stay with you and heal both tanks.

Your fairy isn't dying because it's healing itself. That's wasted time and wasted heals. When I play, my fairy is healing a player 100% of the time. She rarely gets hit because I don't place her because I actually manage her rather than place and let the (very bad) AI take over. I showed you why the AI is bad above....that's worth considering if you really want to trust the AI.

No, my tanks weren't standing together - everyone knows not to do that because Caduceus recombines and gets buffed extremely high. Eos range is plenty high, I've beaten Caduceus 4 times - it's not a problem. Your tanks are standing TOO FAR apart.

Yes, AF2 before relic+1. You aren't giving up much throughput and you are buying yourself an extra hit if you get hit by lag, which happens to the very best of us.

video proof of pet placement during caduceus fight, pet took minimal damage and I didn't even have to MICRO her in this fight just let her do her placed her twice, out healed the whm 95k by 155k Eos had 60+k heals. srry but you have no real proof that place is wasted.

if Eos had stayed by me she would have just healed any damage I took before healing the tank, whats to point of that?i don't need heals I can dodge the tank stands still why should Eos be by me?

I'm not understanding what you guys are quibbling about then. As you've so aptly summarized here, one person is advocating placement to prevent delayed casts, while you're saying minimizing movements achieves more or less the same thing. And since you're both advocating micromanaging faerie heals when possible... what's the issue?
