FFXIV: No Inter connectivity or Emotional Attachment

Like the title says. The game lacks inter connectivity and does not provoke an emotional response from the user.

Right now the game is linear. You beat content to get better items to beat harder content.

No Inter Connectivity

Nothing anyone does effects anyone else (except for the market boards but its a market board. By definition, it must have human interaction and connectivity).
I can kill a fate, kill Ifrit 100 times and become highest rank in my GC..... it will never effect anyone else. Kind of like story mode with an economy right?

No Emotional Attachment

Because there is no inter connectivity where what one or many players do does not effect others, there is a lack of emotional response. No one is taking anything from you. You are not trying to gain resources to survive. What do you care if someone beats rounds 1 and 2 of coil? It doesn't effect you in any way.

The Future

2.1 will bring PVP but I predict it will just be a place where players battle one another to get higher up on the leaderboard in which nothing is gained from doing so except bragging rights. The Devs had mentioned summoning primals and having the whole realm change when one is summoned adding a nice touch of connectivity. (I beat Ifrit and this effects you because when I summon him, the entire realm has fire in the sky).

As opposed to how affected I was when people did raids in WoW or huttball in Tor or completed a dungeon in GW?

Yeah, instead of not being affected at all, I'd rather just go back to not being affected at all.

This isn't fable. Not everything you do will drastically affect the world with dire consequences.

I don't understand how you expect what one small player does in an mmo that hundreds of thousands play at the same time, to affect everyone else?

I didn't know I had to hate somebody in order to have an emotional attachment to a game.

Maybe MMORPGs are not for you. Like an above poster said you are playing a game that thousands of other players are playing. For the longest time developers have been scared of having in game choices affect gameplay and they didn't want to have anyone that had a different experience than another player. It's called Theme Park for a reason. You get into the game and you can experience the same content that everyone else playing the game can experience. It's pretty much either your cup of tea or it isn't. We can't make you like a game and not all games are made for every person to enjoy.

This is a Themepark Game not a Sandbox.

You want interactivity and emotional attachment, you could always join the role-playing community. Grand heapings of both are there, though, they will also remember the BS drama you pull in and out of character.

Sometimes having the game remember you exist and what you've done is not always the best thing. Also, the story, though static, does an excellent job of pulling the ole heart strings. It's on you if you ignore it or not.

Maybe i should throw out some examples of the type of content I would like to see to add inter connectivity and emotional attachment.

Example 1
Doing chocobo caravans (which you are a body guard defending chocobos carrying valuable supplies like in 1.0) will have a direct effect on market taxes or NPC prices.

Example 2
End game content where players fight over territory like in Aion.

Example 3
Defending Ul'dah against invading Coblins. You are only able to attend if you are part of the Immortal Flames. If you don't defend your city, the Coblins will kill people in town.

Like I said before, this is basically a single player game. You have a list of content to go through. There is no deviation in the content or ongoing content that supports the game. You are on this path ------------------> and there is no other path you can take.

Try clearing some of the HM primals, working on your relic, and Coil of Bahamut. My friend's list has grown exponentially due to all the friends I've made making parties for that content. We've had huge "inter-connectivity" and emotional responses (highs and lows) from Chimera, Hydra, HM Primals and Coil. Hell, even in FATE parties I've made some good friends and had great conversations.

To play devil's advocate, if you did missions with other players in SWTOR, then their dialogue choices in the cutscenes did have an effect on you, and provided a different experience compared someone else's choices or playing the mission on your own. Though honestly that is the only situation I can think of where someone else's interaction has anything resembling an attachment/impact on your own character.

Example 1: this could actually have adverse effects on server populations , with over populated severs becoming more so as people move to them for the low low prices.

Example 2: the lore of the game kinda makes the inclusion of this seem out of place and shoe horned.

Example 3: this was terrible when Tabula Rasa tried it... It would the terrible now.

You are not getting the point. None of the examples of content you listed (Primals, Relic, Coil, Chimera, Hydra) effect anyone else if you beat them. The only point you proved in your response is that, talking to someone directly effects them. Which is true but you might as well of said "Well the sky is blue so I'm right".


Think of it like this. You stated you increased your friends list. Is there any content that you get for doing that? Like an achievement for getting 50 friends? Everyone on the server gets a -5% Defense debuff? (I know your next response is going to be, "Why would you get a server wide debuff for getting friends?" and its because you don't understand my point again. My point is:

Content (Friends list, primals, relic) does not change other content.

I'm not talking about changing the story-line either like mass effect.

I can see it now:

Inter Connectivity
Load into the game to find all the quest have already been complete. I get to level 20 and the Grand Company is full and not accepting any new recruits. I go to purchase a chocobo, but all the players before me bought them all, so I get put on a waiting list. I walk into a primal fight only to find the dead corpses left behind after a group of adventurers killed them all weeks before...

Emotional Attachment
After coming to the realization that my dream of becoming a legendary adventure has ended before it even began, my only focus was to survive this harsh and unforgiving world! I happen to make friends with the refugees outside of Ul'dah. With no quest or dungeons to complete for money I, along with other late comers to the game, have resorted to selling "other services" for money.

Today was bitter sweet...I made 56gil, thanks for a Roegadyn with a Lalafell fetish, all it cost me was a dignity. I used that gil to buy some boiled eggs but they were stolen by someone named "Efonefosfn Wifnofismef". He teleported into our refugee camp, grabbed the eggs, and then was gone in the blink of an eye. I couldn't do anything else but cry.

The Future
still waiting on my chocobo...

I love how people say "You rushed to 50 and know nothing". Theres nothing to know about this game 1-49. What is there that I missed? Crafting, no I know it and I get it and I've started leveling it here and there. The story, nope I've finished the story. The quests? No I've done all of them. The zones, I've been to every zone and have 100% map exploration of the entire world (not counting binding coil). I've farmed every mob I can find to see what it drops. I've done each leve at least once. I've ridden the airships, I have every teleport node and every class unlocked and most to level 5+ and 2 level 50's.

What did I miss that makes me not knowledgeable on the game?

You get out of the game what you put into it. What more can be said? Are you asking that we be forced to interact with one another? I thought this is what Free Companies are for. I have an excellent free company where we are making projects together like Risk TV and Final FantasyXIV: 1.0 FanDub

Make an effort, why are players and people so lazy these days, too much of the attitude "ENTERTAIN MEEEE!" when they provided a wonderful playground for you to play on.

After reading the qualifiers on your subsequent posts it sounds like you will be very happy with EQN. What you are asking for, correct me if I am wrong, is a gaming environment where your actions leave a mark in the world. The dynamics of that are difficult to maintain in an MMO although not impossible. Even mundane permanent effects like helping out a farmer in his field and he remarks about it to others. Regarding that, I think things could be placed in later on down the line. Not sure how savvy you are on the history of the development of the game but if you take everything into consideration up to this point and then see what they have planed going forward, it might give you a better understanding on where we are right now with the game. Eventually I think you might get some of what you are looking for, basically bragging rights. Much of it will be Free Company based from what I can recall of past LftP.

Very true. +1 to you sir, I never thought of that.

Still though, that consisted merely of points towards evil and good, it didn't affect the WORLD like OP was saying. It only affected YOUR good/evil standing. It was a key part of the game because only certain weapons/armor etc could be used if you were evil or good, etc.

But TBH I see no diff in having to be evil to use this weapon and having to be x class to use this weapon. It was just a gimmick within a gimmick with no worldly outcome. You do have a very valid point though, mr devil advocate :P

I had a conversation with my FC mates and I did not know MMO's have two genres; Theme park and sandbox.

FFXIV is a theme park in which players do not influence content directly. It's not a sandbox where players generate content or can change it.

So.... I guess it is what it is then. It's not a bad game, it's just not meant to be a "sandbox".
