Beastmaster as a tank.

I'm not exactly sure what other opinions are, but I would love to see the beastmaster in this game but as a tank. I'm usually conflicted with MMO's because I love the pet system classes but always want to play as a tank and those roles are usually dps. I think if done right the beastmaster could work well as a tank. Having the pets do dps or status buffs while you tank would make soloing a bit more interesting and of course tanks (in my opinion) tend to be fun to play in parties. Thoughts?

If your concern is having a buddy to solo with, you can do a quest at 30 which allows your chocobo to fight with you. I think tanks having a dedicated pet would be really awkward.

Oooo, I like the idea to have the pet as a damage dealer and have the player the tank. I like it because it's different in the respect of how most classes with pets work. It wouldn't be difficult to do that either, because on raid fights the abilities that the beast-master would use keep aggro would be coming from the the beast, while the Beast-master is doping defensive cool-downs and such (just make all pet damage re-directed to the master). I also wouldn't want the pet to be the tank because movement fights would be horrid to try to control a pet.

i was a BST in 11 and this idea sounds nice, we already got a DD pet class (SMN) and a healer pet class (SCH). a tank pet class where the pet uses enemity+ and stuns abilities to support the BST sound appealing. also we need more tank classes.. to many DD.


on a side note, i hope they dont implement jugs.. i hope they do something like CHARM this mobs and level it with you, this way you can have a pet of your liking. also with player housing you would be able to have a "stable" where you can store you BST pets.

Man, quit turning my favorite damage dealer classes* from XI into tanks. First WAR, now BST. In all seriousness, I don't mind WAR being a tank here, but I'd prefer to see BST as a DPS job. That said, a proposed system of pet DPS and BST tank is kind of cool, but given how they've implemented WAR compared to PLD so far, I don't have too much faith that it would turn out effective.

*BST was, sort of, a damage dealer... when people let you play with them. In all seriousness, did BST in regular endgame, soloed it to 75, used it some in merit parties over my WAR and MNK, and did endgame with a pet LS too.

It would be cool to have the player only have access to avoidance and mitigation abilities and cool downs, and have your pet produce all of your enmity and damage. Kind of like having a spirit companion that would link off of its created enmity to you. Probably just having the pet stance dance between pure dps, balanced dps/enmity, pure enmity, then like a cool-down stance that would give you extra mitigation or a self-heal or a TP refresh or MP refresh. Something like the player's main combo would be:

1- Channel: increase pet damage by 50% for 7.5 seconds
2- Spirit Link: increase pet damage by 25% for 5 seconds (stacks with Channel), Combo (Channel) - increase player dodge rate by 25% for 10 seconds
3- Duality: increase pet damage by 35% for 2.5 seconds (stacks with Spirit Link), Combo (Spirit Link) - decrease income damage to player by 50% for 2.5 seconds

Just have the beastmaster riding some bad ass mount during battle. Taking hits like a boss!

Riding something similar to Hydra into Coil. That would be fun =D

Ok, I'm officially supporting mounted BST tanks now.

I like the idea of having the DPS pets to to tame more than a chocobo. The mounted BST is probably the greatest idea ever haha.

I actually like (and partially designed but never finished) the idea of Beastmaster as a tank. I agree; I don't think a pure pet tank is wise for control reasons. It is difficult to use a pet to avoid attacks. You could tank most of the trash, but when you hit Qarn or so, you'd be a liability. SCH is bad enough, and that pet isn't in direct AoE range. If you want a pet tank, you will want to use the pet to augment the player tank, not the other way around.

also remember,a class/job with pet mean its weak without pet
look at arcanist class and its job
also yoshi p mention before if player want dragoon to have ability to summon pet wyvern, the dragoon will need to be nerf in damage

I know this isnt part of Beastmaster thread, but i would love to have the option to play DRG with and without a wyvern. A DRG without the pet could have 'absorbed its power' and do the same amount of damage as a DRG with it's pet.

I actually like that idea. honestly I think the beast way to do it for all players would be give the options to the players via taming and see what works. Run a little trial and error.

Two problems I see with this right now is that pet controls are on the same CD as your own actions. So you couldn't manage your pet actions very precisely. You also wouldn't be able to shift the pet out of red when needed. At least, not on the fly. You'd end up with the mob getting turned around and probably get some red splashing onto your mages. It would be very messy.

What could work is the pet as a DD or support, and its actions are tied to your hate meter. So any action performed by the pet goes directly to you for hate. The pet could have DD or debuff modes, along with AoE hate grabbers for when adds pop. Adds come in, you send the pet over to AoE them, and the hate goes directly on to you. They'd have to make it so that it generated more hate than damage, though, otherwise it would be unbalanced. Basically every action it performs increases enmity onto you.

I really like that idea. Modifying the tank and adding aggro and hate makes more sense. I just would like to see the class as a tank because 1) I want more tanks in the game 2) I would like to see a pet class that can effectively tank. I think it would be origional and add to some of the tank play.

Unfortunately DRGs will never get a wyvern in XIV simply because of the game's lore - unlike in Vana'diel where some dragons were holy (like the player's wyvern), in Eorzea however all dragons are evil, they're at literal war with Ishgard where the DRG Job itself comes from, and hence why would a nation who is at war give players the very creature they're zealously fighting against as a pet?

Yes, having a wyvern in FFXI was fun, but it did also dilute a lot of what made DRG so fun in earlier titles, making it more based around the wyvern rather than Jump attacks.

As for BST, that role is somewhat already taken by ACN/SMN/SCH pets and the player's own Companion chocobo, so the Job would rather be redundant (after all, ACN can already use Carby to off tank and and off tank rather well). There's a lot of Jobs in the series that just wouldn't be able to find a home in FFXIV simply because their ability roles are already taken - remember the old saying, 'too many cooks spoil the broth' and all that.

I don't know if it'd be redundant if you yourself were the tank and I think that most people who enjoy having a companion wouldn't mind one more class. Especially of they add a lot of classes to the game down the road.
