If you keep getting error 401 when you're trying to extend your service, I have a solution for you. It's somewhat long but it works:
1. When selecting a method of payment for whatever amount of days you select, choose Crysta.
2. If you don't have enough Crysta, select add Crysta in the box right above the box that shows the amount needed for the renewal.
3. Select the correct amount of Crysta you need to renew your service (EDIT: you can select the "Specify amount of Crysta to add to your account" (last option on the list) to enter the exact amount of Crysta you want/need).
4. Choose UltimatePay.
5. Select Paypal as the method of payment.
6. Purchase the Crysta with Paypal (EDIT: If you try to pay with a credit/debit card you'll get the 401 error).
7.Now you can continue renewing your subscrition without worrying about getting any errors.
8. If for some reason it doesn't show the Crysta you bought in your Crysta Balance after you bought the Crysta, just log out and log in and it should come up.
9. Then proceed to renewing your sub with the Crysta.
This should work fine. It's a bit longer than it SHOULD take but at least it works and will let everyone who wants to play, play. Also keep in mind that if you tried numerous times prior to this and got errors, check your bank statement for missing money. It's happened to many people (including myself). I'm not sure when it'll be fixed but bring it up to SE asap.

It's not long at all.. what's one minute?...knowing that the crysta is added to your account the second you paid.
That's how i did it a few weeks ago , i also did the same with ultimapay or whats it called.. no problems at all and both got me crysta without errors and within a minute.
Just be sure to check on paypal if you have enough money , because if not.. you still get an error.
You even can enable the auto-sub option if you make sure you have enough crysta on your account. -

I also want to add when using UltimatePay (Crysta Purchase Only) , for europeans , you can use IDeal , wich is perfect as it's at the moment "the" way to pay for services and goods next to CC online.

This worked for me, but there are several issues, aside from it being an irritating inconvenience. One, you cannot purchase the exact amount of crysta you need, and as such you wind up paying MORE for the sub than otherwise. Two, it seems several people are unable to even purchase crysta. I was NOT able to do so using ANY of my credit cards, all of which are valid and have plenty of credit available (most of them are unused and have a 0 balance).
Here's the kicker. My household has two separate accounts for two separate people. We set XIV up to be auto renewed using the same CC used to play 11. His account worked fine and apparently was charged just fine. Mine was not. Why did it accept the CC on his account and not mine?! This is particularly strange since the CC is in MY name.
So then I tried other CCs. Still didn't work. 3 Different CCs and none of them work? None can be used to purchase crysta? And now I pay MORE for my sub than he does?
What the hell is going on, SE? Payment should not be difficult. I honest to god don't even understand how this is an issue at all.
It's pretty obvious the issue is on SE's end. If it weren't, then the CC would not have worked for either account. At a minimum, a different card would have been valid for mine. I did not play 1.0 at all. I started only during 2.0 beta. Same with the other household account. The issue is not with any of my banks, it is not with my account information or my personal info. The issue is clearly on SE's end. Fix your crap, SE. Of all the places to encounter glitches, payment should not be one of them. That part is the easiest to process. -

As long as CC exist there has been problems.. i refuse to use CC for that reason.. i haven't seen a single MMO that did not have complaints about it all over.
I choose for the simple way.. anything is simple but CC , it's not SE fault but most of the time the company inbetween it or your CC company.
It never makes sense and it's hard to believe CC companies still havent fixed those issues -

Arymys, you can select "Specify amount of Crysta to add to your account" (the last option on the list) in order to type the exact amount you need/want. The reason I said pay with PayPal is because it still gives you an error if you try with a credit/debit card. But yeah the whole thing is on SE's end and it's complete BS that this hasn't been fixed after 2 weeks of complaints from various people.

Keep in mind that Crysta may not show up as an option if SE has chosen not to make it available for your region.
They really need to provide some sort of guide as to which regions do/don't have Crysta available to them--it's caused a lot of headaches over the years.
If Crysta is available to you as a payment option, you can also use the Ultimate Game Card codes as well (add the code via the Ultimate Pay option, there is a separate tab for entering your UGC code). You can get the physical cards at local store, or buy the codes at a number of places online.

I tried to add crysta with Pay-Pal twice now, and both times there was an error, and i couldn't pay. So now what do I do? The cards don't seem to be working, AND my dad doesn't want to go the card route. So I need to use Pay-Pal, but now I can't pay with that either! GAAAHHHH! :/ -

I am aware ING, ABN-AMRO and Rabobank go way beyond the borders of our little country, yet iDeal can currently only be used with Dutch bank accounts.

Oh, one more thing... if you've never used Crysta before, make sure you have a Crysta Passbook on your account. When the SE AM system first went into play, you had to click the Crysta Passbook link and go through the process of setting up the Passbook and linking it to your Service Account. There might be some legacy coding there that hasn't been updated yet. Log into your SE AM page (not the Mog Station), and go into your Crysta Passbook from there to make sure one even exists if you haven't used Crysta in the past. You can try adding Crysta directly from there as well once you've verified it--some of the screens may look a bit different in the process, but it follows the same flow as mentioned previously.

Glad to be of help lol , i was also very very worried on how to pay after they removed ClicknBuy , since i pay FF14 with it like from 2010.
You can imagine how happy i was when i discovered the IDeal and paypal option.. i am far from happy with crysta tho.. but at least it's a payment method i can easely use.
Also crysta passbook? , i noticed i have it on my account.. but i never ever clicked it or used it or used crysta in the past.. no clue then why i have one on my account, guess SE decided just to add one just incase XD -

Same boat as RedAntares. Even tried to use a UGC from a local EB Games, which was denied as well. Getting very tired of this issue, and have been fighting with it for the last week and a half. Now the free trial is over, and I am unable to continue to play due to problems on SE's end.

I use this method all the time, even with FFXI. For me the best thing is that I don't have to worry about any overdraft charges cause I forgot about my subscription, or if I want one month or more it works great for me. :) Ive had great luck using the Paypal and Ultimate Pay method.

Folks if you bought UGCs and keep getting the error when entering the codes, contact PlaySpan directly and they will manually drain your UGC into your SE account. It took them 24 hours to do mine and it is a lot faster (not to mention more productive) than SE's customer service.
