The first hour was fun.......then it was all downhill.

I'm having a real hard time with the game design logic. I complete a quest and I get "rewarded" with damaged gear. I can't equip it because it's damaged. "Well, that's not very rewarding, I guess I'll get it repaired", I think. I try different merchants to repair the item (right click on the item) and I keep getting the same error message that this item can only be repaired by a leatherworker. Seems straight forward enough... I go to the leatherworkers guild... FULL of leatherworking NPCs, none of them can repair anything!? <LOGIC TRAINWRECK>. I'm search the ingame help section, searched the forums, downloaded the "Libra Eorzea app". The word "repair" just doesn't seem to exist. If the objective is to starve players of the information to preform menial tasks, then this is an epic triumph! The first hour I was thinking I could sign up for this. Then it became a masterpiece of frustration.

........................... I don't even know where to start.

The gear you are rewarded is never rewarded damaged so you are attempting to repair the wrong gear sorry.

And you need to go to a repair NPC listed on your map by a Hammer Icon

There is no quest that rewards you with damage gear. That said, the repair NPCs are marked with a tool icon on your map. When you had your first fight there was a tutorial that popped up on your screen explaining this, unless you disabled them, or skipped past it.

Also, according to your profile, you're only level 4. You will be wearing your starting gear until 5. There is no gear or weapon you can equip that you did not start with before then, unless you pre-ordered and got a special head piece, which it doesn't sound like you did.

Well only thing I can think of if you are too low level or have a reward for a different class than one you are using then the item (gear) would have a red x on it and to some may think it needs repairing but all it is you don't meet the requirements for the gear

Also in this game the guys that repair gear are called menders

You are confused. No quest rewards with damaged gear. I wonder what your problem actually was.

I think his issue was what I said the little red x on gear is a bit of a throw off to some not knowing it means you don't meet the requirements and not that it's broken :).

yea I think hes trying to put on lvl 5 gear from quest rewards while hes not lvl 5 yet... lol.
What game would ever award damaged gear for quest reward rofl.

To be honest I clearly remember that I started a new character and I was surprised because in a way the game referred to the rewarded gear as damaged (literally) indeed. Not sure what it meant, because it was really too confusing. Especially having played the game a bit with my main character already.

The red x means you do not meet the level requirements for the gear, as in, you do not have any class that is of a high enough level. A green x means you do have the appropriate class at the appropriate level to equip the gear, but you currently have a different class active. Which level and class you need to equip a piece of gear is right there in the gear description, which I suggest reading carefully in the future.

Damage to your gear on the other hand is shown by the left one of the two small bars on the side of your equipped gear's icon, as well as the colour of the dots that represent your equipped gear in the bag slots bar. When gear starts to get damaged, the dot and bar is green, and the bar will go down. When it turns red, that means it is now too broken to give you its stats benefits. Repair it to get it back to working condition.
NPCs that repair your gear for you are called Menders, but at camps outside the city, you can often also repair at an armour merchant. Repair Gear is separate a menu point when you talk to them. Repairing at an NPC costs only gil, and they will repair all gear that is not at 100% indiscriminately.
You can also repair your gear yourself, that is what the 'Repair' menu point in the right-click menu of your gear icon is for. Repairing your gear yourself requires a piece of Dark Matter, which you can either buy from NPCs (normally found under 'Tools') or gain from Mining, as well as a high enough level in the crafting job as indicated in the gear description (f.ex. lvl 1 Leatherworker).

He is not mistaken. I had mentioned this the first week the game came out and I got these types of replies. I never went back on that server to see what was going on with that character but I think that some of the folks are right. You picked disciple of war type of gear or something that is still to high for you I did this on my archer thinking I picked the right one.

They should have some sort of error when you go to put it on that it is not the right class or level instead of having said that it needs to be repaired by a leather worker. It really makes no sense.

They don't give you an error message because they expect you to read the stats before you pick/buy the item. It tells you right on the stats window when you hover over the item what level it is and what class(es) it's for. If you're of the right level and class, it's green, if you're one level behind, it's yellow, otherwise it's in red writing.

You really have no excuse after that. :/

Right. But as it happened to me it didn't say you don't have the right level for wearing it, it said it was damaged. Which was confusing the least. I even went checking the stats of the gear and I saw it was at 100%. Then later, once reached the minimum level I saw i could wear it. The immediate question popping in the mind was "WTF?".

Before accepting your quest reward gear, check stats, simple as, its not broke, its penple being lazy then coming on here to qq after it was there own mistake!

Somehow you got rewarded with a piece of damaged gear, which is what crafting players can use to make vintage gear. It's not gear yet, it's a crafting mat.

That said, the story rewards you with plenty of normal gear, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you don't want to level crafting, you can sell it.
