Is using Regen a bad practice for end game contents?

I absolutely love regen, as it helps me so much to solve the MP shortage preoblem. Now I have the habit of keeping regen on tank almost all the time through a fight (whether boss or mobs, unless the tank is not taking damage of course).

But I just came across a thread where a WHM says regen is useless and he never use it because it may generate unnecessary aggro from over-healing. Just using cure/medica spells is enough.

Then I recalled the ~10 times CM runs I've done, only 1 WHM (besides me) ever used regen (which I think is really good since we can then just stand there and don't even need to use cure anymore).

So my question is, for the harder end game contents I'll be doing later, should I try to avoid using regen and just use cure to control the over-heal?

Its all situational. In CM during certain bosses...there are what some 7 adds to spawn at times during bosses? A regen on a tank will put hate on you generally if they can't grab aggro on them right away. During bosses that hit pretty hard, well the regen helps out quite a bit. Especially during Coil, Turn 1/2. Now during 4 I only use it during certain times before I know enemies won't spawn and I won't pull hate. I myself use it quite a bit, but give the tank some time to grab a little hate before you do so. There is no reason to cast it right away.

During Ifrit I always have it up. Same with Titan. Now Garuda, I'll hold off until the sisters die and I'm sure not to use it or have it up before they do. If you're doing fine so far or already know when to cast there is not much more I need to tell you. Always keep an eye on the enemies aggro and wait a little if you have to if you get into orange to heal again.

It's just a case of knowing when to use all your skills. It's mostly about not spamming it or using it before a Tank pulled a mob. For adds you need to learn when adds will spawn to max your heals without pulling aggro. Stoneskin is a wonderful skill for this. It will grant a few seconds for the Tank to get aggro on adds without needing a heal and then you can go ahead and use whatever skill you want. On the above Garuda example Healers often get the first aggro from the Garuda clones anyway and you can use shroud to drop it.

With everything you can use it just never overheal and spam skills.

Regen is a great spell, it's very mana efficient and can help smooth the damage on the tank. Only thing that drives me insane is seeing it overused in times where it's not efficient, like throwing regen on a dps to heal 400 HP when he's unlikely to take more damage for the duration of regen.

As for threat, regen is only going to be a concern threat wise if you use it while the tank is pulling or as adds spawn. Outside of that, if anything is gonna cause you to pull threat, it's usually being forced to medica often in 8 man groups.

I love regen ever so much. On demon wall 90% of my healing is from regen and medica II's regen.

The main things to note about using regen, unless you know your tank will click off regen before he pulls (very few will, and I often tell the ones I'm in mumble with to remove it right before they pull) don't cast it when the last mob has about 1/4 to 1/2 their life left.

Regen is excellent to place on people you know won't be taking damage again for a while, throw it up on them and focus back on the tank. And its especially useful on warrior tanks place it and stoneskin on a warrior and you may not need to cure at all unless a lot is going on.

Its better for longer fights I would say (Tank Perspective)

I would say one thing I see a lot of Healers not doing is refreshing stoneskin during fights, 90% of healers are only using it as a pre buff not refreshing it during fights.

Outside of warriors, stoneskin can be to MP intense for most healers, it's the same cost as a Cure II without the chance to crit. So unless the tank is taking so little damage that they're in cleric stance (which doesn't affect stoneskin) they're usually more comfortable with their MP pool to use Cure/Cure II. Stoneskin also has a longer cast time, that can feel painfully slow if a tank is taking damage.

In general, it's used at the start to allow the tank to build threat, and then reapplied situationally (I often reapply during Ifrit Charges in hardmode, or swift cast one if I have to run away for a mechanic, or during something catastrophe in AK) Also if a dps or myself gets hit it's often regen + stoneskin.

That's because of it's 3 second cast timer. Also, it is 18%. Assuming 5000 HP that would be 900 damage prevented. I am assuming it is 399 mana at level 50 (based on the websites I found), that can be pretty mana intensive in a fight. I haven't played WHM, bu from my observations, WHMs that prioritize to keep this up go OOM faster than those that use other tools, like Regen. WHMs could buff up the group with Stoneskin before the pull to avoid that spikey damage during initial threat grab, then could begin their normal healing rotations.
Due to my observations, I would have to disagree with you wanting stoneskin during fights as a priority.

Not as a priority but if I am topped off to 90 - 100% health instead of doing nothing, why not re-apply stoneskin.

This is 8 man groups I am talking about where you almost always have a bard and mp song.

If you're talking about the post that I'm thinking of, you should probably just disregard anything that person says about Regen. They admitted that they never once used it for dungeons or HM Primals, so no wonder they've never seen it be useful.

I'll put it this way: in a HM Ifrit run, two WHMs can pop Divine Seal and throw a regen on the tank. For the next 20 seconds, those WHMs can do whatever the hell they want to do (dance sprightly for Ifrit, sprint in circles, run up and melee Ifrit, etc). At the end of those 20 seconds, the tank will likely still be at or above 80% HP and both healers will still be 7th and 8th on the boss's emnity list. Regen as its own skill doesn't generate unnecessary amounts of aggro. Regen, like every other skill we have, only generates excessive aggro when used improperly.

6 of one half a dozen of the other... I could be doing something else with that cast time... esuna, dps, whatever... and then just using cure and maybe getting cure 2 procs.

Maybe I am dodging AoEs...

Unless there is a severe damage spike coming, I just don't see the point when I can just cure after and fish for procs. I will SS if there is a big spike coming.
