Question on Class/Job
Hi everyone, new player to FFXIV here and i'd like some input. Wall Of text incoming so my apologies.
When i first created this character i wanted to be a dps so i chose marauder without actually reading the class text, whoops. Got that to level 15, found out it was a tank so then went and leveled a lancer to level 15. After 3 failed duty finder attempts on the first dungeon (and waiting 40 minutes in the queue for each one) due to tanks not knowing what on earth they had to do, i thought i might as well don the tanking gear and get in instantly. 30 minutes later, dungeon done with no hicups whatsoever and i had a blast.
Now here is my problem, from reading the various posts on here i have gathered that WAR tanks are not exactly viable for endgame content so leveling my MRD to 50 might be a huge waste of time.
Would you guys recommend going and leveling to PLD, or stick it out with WAR or Dragoon?

As a healer, War are a bit harder to heal if the player doesnt manage their overpower (to keep everyone else from getting emnity) and their self-heal abilities. Pld, however dont get hit as much do to sheild/block-rate, though also have its own issues (as it has flash for an aoe emnity gain on mana--when its out its either ether or zerg)
as a War you will probably want to get gld to 34 for the cross class skill. you may want to work on PGL/MNK to get fleetfoot(4), second wind (8)and if ambitious Mantra (42)
As a Pld you will probably want to get mrd to 26 for the cross class skill. You may want to level CNJ/WHM to get protect (8) and Stoneskin (34)
but really its all down to what you want to play, and the style. Warriors are built as a aoe/self-heal or bust tank and Paladin is built to take a bit more hits, but can loose emnity fast if the enemies aren't marked for their order.
As to dragoon, I'd still work on it. Be it after something else gets to 50, and you get the xp bonus for second class, or when you dont wanna tank (if your not working on classes for skills)
Good Luck!

The question I think you should ask yourself is how you want to play. If you plan to be casual and do 4-man's and easier 8-man's you'll be fine as WAR. The part people mention with WAR not being viable endgame is at the extreme cutting edge of content. When undergeared, the "HP tank" starts to break down compared to the "mitigation tank".

Game director said that people who say WAR are not viable end game need to learn to play the class. I run with a WAR who takes less damage than most of the PLDs I've played with, so I say it is all about the player.

Wanna know the only bit of content that Warriors aren't viable? (and by that I mean VIABLE not "Optimal choice")
Turn 5 of the Binding Coils of Bahamut. The one piece of content that nobody, NOBODY has cleared up to now.
So yeah, WAR is viable. How willing are you to put up with bullshit others are going to sling at you and how much work are you willing to put in this game? That'll decide wether you roll WAR or not.
(not to say WAR couldn't use some fine-tuning still, but yeah)
