Just as the title says. Is 50% really 50% in synthesis or is it b.s? Anyone have any data on this, moreover is it possible in any way raise success rate of synthesis, not just how much you gain per action?

I guess you're talking about Hasty Hand? That action really benefits from being buffed by Steady Hand or Steady Hand II.
And even at that, I think the 50% is just a starting point where the actual chance of success is impacted quite a bit by your level versus the recipe level. I can just tell you anecdotally that I tend to succeed more with Hasty Hand when I am far above the recipe level, and fail a lot more with each action when working on 1 and 2-star recipes.
Of course you could go even further and suspect that crafting is affected by the time, moon, weather, which direction you are facing, etc. That could help to explain when certain synths just seem doomed to failure where actions that should have an 80% to 90% success rate fail 5 times in a row, and you end up NQ'ing at 94%. But I don't think anyone has any proof on any of this. Sometimes we just get lucky, and sometimes luck works against us.
No it is really 50%. The only reason the rates seem off sometimes is because you are using such a small sample. If you want to raise the rate then use steady hand. Other then that there is no way to increase your chances of success.
