Final Fantasy <-> Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest X producer Yosuke Saito and Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida announced a collaboration to crossover both games as part of the SE 25th anniversary

Final Fantasy XI is included in the crossover, there will be several collaboration events before the year ends.

Who else is looking forward to fight Shantotto? ;)

I don't like it. DQ monsters are so childish and lame.

but if it's just a short term event then it's ok.

The way I see it FFXIV unfolds in the future timeline of FFXI, proof of that is that the Soul stone used to go from THM to BLM is called "The gem of Shantotto" and I don't see her sharing her possessions with anyone :P, in the same subject there's going to be a crossover with FFXIII-3 with Lightning in the main scenario story line I believe.

It's actually the Gem of Shatotto. No 'N' in there. The localization team has made nods to other games but have never directly referenced them.

FF universes are often separate, with the exception of the Ivalice games and direct sequels. To the best of anyone's knowledge, there is no direct tie-ins with the other games to FFXIV.

Also, as a big fan of DQ this is pretty cool. Waiting on the next single player DQ game to come out.

The more you read into the game's quest lines the more it does seem like it's set sometime in the future of Vanadiel even if it's a "different world" - Goldsmith quest for example, one of the earlier automata's were named Mnejing many many years (century) ago and remodeled and renamed into Gigi - So you can say it's a nod, but at the same time, given Atomos's Existence and his purpose, we know Vanadiel has at least 2 Timelines that exists and it's not that far fetched in the long run, we'll see what SE does with the stories "explaining why Mamool Ja's are in this world", not to mention the whole fact Shanttoto herself created Dimensional Magic.

It's a very common and accepted idea that the FF worlds were all meant to be linked in some fashion without the obvious "Sequel" thing.

I am looking forward to the DQ Golem pet. Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior as it was localized) was the first RPG I played so its a bit of a nostalgia thing for me.

As for Shantotto, eh, I didn't play FFXI so its not really targeted to me. I'm sure the FFXI fans will enjoy fighting her well enough.

I have to disagree with you there. The geography, technology, races, types of magic, types of worlds, mechanics of the universes (Lifestream Vs. Mist Vs. Crystals for example) are all different in every installment. The only similarity are the common FF elements we're all familiar with, similarities which don't have to be explained. The games don't have to have an in-game reason to be a series, they just are one. Even these cross-overs don't need to be canon to be included.
