Swords for the Swordless

Ok I love this game. I want that to be known right off the bat.

But after leveling Gladiator from 1-45 with 50 just around the corner, I have to say. What the heck? In my entire leveling experience I have only had a very small handfuls of actual swords. 1-25 was mostly daggers. 25-35 was mostly the wooden paddle, with a couple of decent actual sword looking swords. Then from 38-45 I have been back to the wooden paddle. I just recently upgraded to a "scimatar" but it so curved that it could be mistaken for a hand scythe.

By the time a gladiator becomes a Paladin I think we deserve to be using real looking swords. Not daggers, not wooden paddles. Swords. I have vary rarely felt like a Paladin. I feel more like a dork with a paddle who lost his canoe.



I understand it might be based off of some ethnic weapon from South America. But everyone has a distinct idea of what a Paladin should be using. At least give us some variety and give different weapons different stats that make them desirable. If it is just plain better than my sword I feel very underwhelmed.

Is this gonna make me quit? Hell no. But I think that we deserve some consistent swords once we hit the 30+ range. Full plate just looks silly with a wooden paddle club thing.

Yes, I did. You are complaining about the lack of "proper" swords. Macuahuitl is a proper sword, just from a different era. If you want all the swords to be metal longswords, that's not gonna happen.

I didn't link the wikipedia page to make you seem "ignorant", but it's clear you didn't read through it. It's not a "wooden club", it's a sword. At this point, I highly doubt the devs are going to change all the macuahuitl in to steel swords just because you don't like it, so what's the point? I'm sure in in future patches we get all sorts of swords.

I did seem to notice the lack of "proper" swords. But I didn't seem too bothered by it. Me being a bard has nothing to do with it by the way.

In the very article you mention they do not classify it as a sword. They call it sword like. They also call it a club and a baton as well. The point is it is not a conventional sword. Its a unique weapon to parts of South America.

The entire point I was trying to make is there is a distinct lack of standard style of swords. (European, Asian North American, Middle Eastern and so on) The fact is the weapon I mentioned is use far to often. I do not expect them to fix it over night. But I do want my voice my opinion.

My purpose wasn't to start a debate whether or not macuahuitl is a sword or not, my whole point was that it's entirely a design decision. And while criticism can be given on any game's art direction, I have no idea what you are hoping to accomplish. Art direction is the one thing that most gaming companies do not take feedback for, mostly because everything comes down to opinions. The fact that you do not like obsidian edged, club-like swords isn't reason enough for Square-Enix to stop making swords with such designs.
It's great that you want to voice your opinion, but this isn't a feedback forum. I wish more players would start to realize that. There are proper ways to submit feedback, in-game and out.

I think Flametongue was my first actual sword weapon at 38. For such an unbelievably pathetic, boring, stereotypical looking sword, I was way happy to get it. And then I got the ancient sword, and I wish I could keep that sword's look for the rest of the game. As much as I love toothpicking enemies with a dagger, I'd rather more Ancient sword types.

Guild Wars 2 this game is not.

The Macuahuitls don't bother me so much, even if they are used a bit too much (If the devs wanted exotic how about more scimitars/sabers?).

The daggers on the other hand drive me nuts. A tank in burly plate mail and a tower shield just looks completely ridiculous wielding a tiny knife. And you just keep getting the stupid things. Replace the daggers with some reskins of the starting short sword and save the dagger models for the thief, ninja, and/or other future classes that look proper using them.

Actually this and the General Discussion forum are the closest things we have to an out game feedback system. If you try to submit feedback to Sqaure directly you get redirected to these forums. Not to mention forums like these are the best way of getting support/criticism of your feedback idea from the community.
