hello all this is my first FF MMO game i have ever played, so in a way i am very confused.
my only real concern is, how i become a black mage, my THAUM is level 11, people said oh you just equipped a bow and level as a archer to level 15... and then switch to THAUM and level that to 30 and you get a soul gem... but how do i switch to archer.. i am so confused with this, if their is a in depth guide that explains all of this that would be so nice.

Ok, here's how it works:
You start out as your beginning class. You can not change that class until you complete your class's level 10 quest. After that, you are able to travel to the other classes' guilds and join those classes. At that point, you will be able to become that class just by changing weapons.
For jobs, you have to level a job's primary class (Thaumaturge in the case of the Black Mage) to 30, complete that level 30 class quest, and then level the job's secondary class (Archer for Black Mage) to 15. At this point, you will travel to the primary class's guild (Thaumaturge guild) and they will give you a quest. When you finish that quest, you will receive an equippable soul crystal that will make you a specific job, in your case, a Black Mage.
After finishing your lvl 10 class quest(Thaumaturge) you can join other guilds. In order to join you have to visit the guild and speak to the receptionist.
For archer you have to travel to Gridania which is a long way through higher level areas so I would advise you to wait and continue your storyline quests until you get the airship pass(~lvl 15) which allows you to easily travel from Ul'dah to Gridania.
