Shared drops?

I love how FATES made this a co-op game vs people getting angry and frustrated with other players over NMs (Notorious Monsters).
I'd like to bring that same spirit to item gathering; I know we get exp from attacking the same mob, but could we also get our standard chance for drops like crafting materials?

I bring this up because on two different occasions I was gathering hides/fleece and had another player swear at me because I pull faster.
This goes against what I consider the true spirit of FFXIV and what separates it from the other MMOs, the concept that we, the players, adventurers, are all working together towards some common goal.
