Leatherworker/DoH noob, need advice

i decided to start up leatherworker yesterday and realize i really don't know what im doing. i've just been crafting everything i can from the crafting log, so i could use some guidance(lvl 15 leatherworker currently). Also is their any way to get HQ stuff without HQ mats?

Also do i need to upgrade me gear i wear while crafting? If so can i buy it from vendors or do i craft it myself?

First advice I would give any noob crafter - even if you are only planning on taking one DoH to 50, get WVR, ALC, CUL, LTW, and CRP to 15. This gives you access to 5 very nice cross-class abilities that may it way easier to synth HQ items (~75% of the time for even level with no HQ mats, 100% on anything you can make with HQ mats), which means higher EXP on the combine, and 300% EXP and Gil on leves.

edit: You will obviously not be able to slot all 5 cross class abilities at once - you will need to prioritize them based on what class you are currently. Personally, I prioritize Hasty Touch and Waste Not first, then Tricks of the Trade, Rumination, and ... don't remember the name of the WVR ability, but 0% chance of failing a progression is worth the 10% hit in progress...

You can get any crafting class to 15 with inexpensive materials available at crafting guild vendors - Even if what you need is not available at the crafting guild you are leveling (Leather at the leatherworker's guild, for instance) it is available at the other crafting guilds.

After that, if you have the time and inclination, get the rest of them to 15 as well, as the other cross-class abilities, while not as universally useful as the four mentioned above, are situationally useful.

well i've finally gotten all those classes to 15 now. So i just keep making random stuff from the crafting log and doing leves to lvl?

Also am i able to make HQ stuff out of normal mats at this lvl? And do i need to upgrade me gear i wear while crafting? If so can i buy it from vendors or do i craft it myself?

I'm not trying to be rude or insensitive but... have you considered actually doing some research by yourself? Half the fun of crafting is actually figuring out for yourself what to do. I'm not trying to take shots at you, please understand, but it's very discouraging to see somebody ask for their hand to be held in this manner.

i actually have done quite a bit of reading around but most of the stuff seems to be about mid - high lvl crafting. im just trying to make sure i'm doing things the best/correct way. And have a good understanding of what i'm doing

There is no best/correct way. Everything is just variables. For example, do you have a botanist leveled? How about a weaver? What kind of materials do you have at hand? How are material prices on your server? And so on. So it all comes to just doing your research. Asking for advice on these things is like asking somebody else to do half the work for you, and even then they aren't going to give you a fully informed answer, because they do not know your situation better than you do.

All I can say is, that 1-20 in every craft is relatively straightforward, and you can level by buying materials from guild vendor. Only thing you have to figure out is how to get shards. But honestly, if you are not willing to put even that much effort into crafting, 20+ is going to be horrible for you, as you have to actually figure out what recipes are worth it (depends on your servers market board prices).
