Are you able to share experience points with other classes?

For example if I'm a white mage and I kill a mob is there a way so another class can share the exp? A friend told me this was possible not sure if he was blowing smoke or not

No. If you earn exp in any way as CNJ/WHM then that's where the experience will go. If it's capped, the exp is lost (so try to avoid turning in quests as a capped class, although level restrictions may not give you a choice. Remember that you can turn in quests as a crafter or gatherer class).

You can only share EXP in the group(s) / party - then each kill from each party member is awarded to all members of the party if they're in the close proximity.

Your friend may have been talking about gaining exp on Jobs and their base Classes at the same time. It's specifically noticeable for SMN/SCH/ACN. Your job level is tied to its base class level, so if you level SMN, for example, you're simultaneously leveling ACN and SCH, since all three share the same XP pool.
