How Do You Get a Pet?

I was wondering how you get a pet and do they serve a purpose?

Just ask, someone will give you a free pettin'.. ok in all serious there are vendors that sell them for around 2400gil. I can't remember where they are but usually I think they are just named "merchant"

Well I can tell you that the cat I got from preorder does nothing but follow my character around...when it's not vanishing all the time for some reason. Haven't seen the regular pets do anything special either.

Your talking about minions, not pets. And they are just Vanity items that follow you around for looks.

Pets, so far, are your summons that the Arcanist and its jobs get. They fight along side you automatically or you can control them manually.

You can buy them at the pet store merchant in the 3 major cities' shopping district ( it is an npc with a bird cage and a rabbit trap beside him)

Minions doesn't serve any purpose, except Cuteness! :o

There are 'Pets' (Summon).
There are 'Minions' (Non-Combat Vanity 'Pets').
There are 'Companions' (Company-Issued Chocobo, Level 30 Quest).

This I true for 3 Minions at 2400 Gil each. The rest you obtain from Quests, Dungeons, FATEs, and Gathering. At the moment I do not think there is a Crafted minion. You can also obtain them from Veteran Rewards, CE Bonus, and other 'Bonus' Item promotions (Before Meteor Soundtrack = Wind-Up Dalamud).

At least one you will get by default by simply playing through the main storyline fairly early (the wind-up airship, gained when you finish the level 15 envoy quest and gain your airship pass at the same time). But the rest are found as mentioned above. :)
