Strafe using a PS3 controller without locking on?

Hey, all. Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't figure this out.

Last night, I was doing Amdapor Keep on WHM. We got to the Demon Wall, and I noticed it was difficult to keep myself facing him at all times. I would run left and right, but then I would have to perfectly readjust my character's facing, which takes time from me being able to heal other party members.

The problem with Lock-On is that if you get too far to the left or right, you're facing slightly diagonal, which still pushes you off the floor.

Is there a way to strafe using a PS3 controller? Or, being a PS3 user, am I just out of luck?

Edit: Fooling around, apparently you strafe if you put yourself in first person mode and move to the sides. That might have to work if there is no other way.
