Old Materia - risk all of your gear, time, and wealth to make forbidden melds that put you above and beyond what you could have been without it.
New Materia - risk significantly less to make forbidden melds that cap out and don't make much of a difference.

Only thing I wish I had done, going from one version to the other, was have a bunch of trash items melded so i could turn them in for easy darklight tomes lol
You need to take a closer look at melding, especially the higher level two star battle gear. There's a reason they're so expensive to make.
