Armorsmiths and Endgame Content?

My question comes in 2 parts, but in essence, is there much point in lvling armorsmith to 50? (beyond repairing gear)

Question 1: Does an armorsmith play a role in endgame equipment? Blacksmiths make a number of weapons, as do weavers, and other classes are needed to affix materia onto weapons for the relic quest... but armorsmiths just make armor... and there is no relic armor...

Question 2: This is more of a general question, but here goes. Can you meld materia onto equipment that has no slots? Basically, can you perform a risky materia meld on endgame gear such as Darklight, the Mythology items, and relic weapons?
