Making the game more compatible with older technology?

One of the things i liked most about FFXI was that over time it became more compatible with laptops and computers and you could set the graphics pretty low but still have a pretty decent gaming experience.

I play mainly on my desktop with a amd quad core and a 1GB graphics card but i also like to play on the go with my late 2010 macbook (bootcamp win7 64bit),4GB ram dual core and 320m nvidia graphics. The wierd thing is i get mixed results because when i lower the graphics it doesnt really help the gameplay but when i keep things set to standard it looks great and gameplay is ok but not amazing.

I realise FFXIV is not built for laptops especially macbooks and that the game is far from complete but i would like to think that SE could implement some changes to make the game more compatible with older hardware so we could play with lowered graphics and decent gameplay.
