I fire up the launcher, log in, get to the title screen and the start button is greyed out and unable to be selected.

Yes, the NA/EU servers went down as of like 5 minutes ago.
At least, the login portion is down.

The login button was greyed out for me as well. Now I just can't connect to my world because it's full (and there's not a queue system, lulz).
Oh, my mistake, there's a queue system, but you have to sit in front of the character select screen and continually attempt to login. It's nice that they tell you there's 100+ people ahead of you, though.
Yep, now they are up again but for now I'm stuck with my dear old error 1017
