ffxivsetup.exe crash after language select

This is the digital download I'm having trouble with.

It installed just fine on my desktop. Works great.

On my laptop, it is a crash every time.


-Windows 8
-running as administrator
-compatibility mode is not selected or enabled


After I select a language, the final fantasy xiv logo is displayed for a few seconds before it crashes with an error:

Anyone? I know someone has had this problem, too. I just can't figure it out.
