Subscription, is it mandatory?

Hi, i've played the last beta and got interested in FFXIV but I have a question about the subscription.

I've been wondering if subscribing with a credit card if mandatory in order to play, I've had an experience in past that I bought a digital copy from a retailer with 30 days but once I registered the key it was mandatory that I add a credit card and choose a subscription plan in order to get my free 30 days.

Do I have to do the same in order to play FFXIV? Or can I just buy the digital copy from a retailer, add the key and play for 30 days without doing anything else?

After that I'd add time with game time cards as I'm not really into credit cards.

You can use Time-cards and UGC's I believe. I will be using one of the two since I don't wanna add my CC here lol.

You don't have to use a credit card. Walmart selld those Ultimate Game cards. You can buy those and redeem them. You just have to do it before the end of the billing cycle. On the SE page, look up Unsing Crystia and there is a link to Ultimate Pay, and it will tell you.
