[Rep Response Request] - Duty Finder - is it limited to data centers?

If you could please respond I'd be really grateful!

Can you confirm for us please:

Will Duty Finder pull characters from all servers regardless of data center for party groupings?

Or

Is Duty Finder limited to only pull from the worlds/servers in the same Data Center that your world is based out of?

Theorically it shouldn't be, as the datacenters are still connected (IE: you can log in to both datacenters seamlessly), but this is just my speculation. I'm curious to hear a dev response as well.

Ideally, for the future, I'd really like to be able to manually connect with players on other servers instead of having the duty finder give me random people, in order to play some with my Japanese friends.

This isn't going to happen. Create a character on those other servers if you want to play with specific people. The duty finder is a matchmaking system essentially

Yoshida clearly stated on multiple occasions that the server technology can support further interactions between servers, and down the line something like this is possible.

So you may want to let those that know respond to this kind of questions, instead of talking about things you know nothing about like your personal (and incorrect) opinion was fact.

Usually MMO's make a killing on Fees like server transfers

I am not sure if they would give that up

"Stuff is possible" != "is going to happen"

It's possible to make Culinarian the most powerful class in battle stabbing enemies with forks and other kitchen utensils. But that's not going to happen. When are you going to stop flip flopping? Do you intentionally post contrary viewpoints for the sake of doing so?

Here's some reasons why it's probablly not going to happen:

-Friend lists are server specific. there's no ingame way to directly alert the friend on the other server to join your group.
-There's no precedent for this that I'm aware of. I don't know of another game that lets you name specific people on other servers to play with.
-It would be pointless. they may as well completely link the servers together and treat them as one world (which would likely lead to serious crowding issues) If you want to play with this person on anotehr server so badly, why aren't they on yours / why aren't you on theirs?

My opinion is not incorrect. Opinions are neither right or wrong, and you can't and haven't proven anything. You made an ambiguous statement saying (effectively) "oh, yoshida said they can upgrade things, so they can make it possible in the future." In the future, anything is possible. This doesn't make my opinion "wrong."

oh yeah, you also didn't provide any specific quotations from Yoshida or anyone at SE, or any sources of any kinds for your ststement. I've seen a pattern in this, where you demand sources from others but don't give them yourself. What kind of journalist doesn't cite sources?

JPGAMES: Talking about playing on your own and partying with others… What do you think is the ratio the game can offer? Is there a certain balance between solo play and party play? Is it easy to switch between playing on your own and playing with people together?

YOSHIDA: First of all as the basical, we have a lot of solo contents and you can play in the way you prefer to. For example the FATE,we mentioned earlier, everyone could join in it, when it happens. But after it happens, the other players can just go their own way. So you don’t have to stick to party battle or anything like that. And up to Lv.15 you don’t need to have any party experience, that’s how we designed it for the early stage of the game.

Also talking about the party system, there’s of course a time, when you need to join a party to complete the Main Story Scenario. So at that time you don’t have to sort of actively go and see players by shouting or calling in the world by yourself. We are implementing as system called Duty Finder, which is like a content finder. The system can automatically find suitable members for your own party – automatically not only from the server you are playing on, but all the different worlds, all the different servers, so it’s going to be very easy to party. And the system also sort of makes sure, that it’s a good balanced party. So you just need to place a request like ‘This is a dungeon I want to try out.’ and then the Duty Finder will automatically do it for you. So you can enjoy a party experience in a very easy way.

So if you want to play in party, that’s absolutely fine. You can enjoy the Party Play a lot. But also if you prefer to play on your own in the Solo Mode, that’s absolutely fine as well. When we talk about the ratio, it just simply depends on the player’s preference.

When a developer goes out of his way to say that something is possible "Not going to happen" is simply a false assumption based upon nothing.

"Friend List are server specific now" =/= ""Friend List are server specific forever"

There are games out there with cross server friend lists, and there's no reason to believe that the server structure of this game can't handle it if need be.

"No one has done it before" =/= "No one will ever do it"

By the way, it's been done in The Secret World and Guild Wars 2, and it's being done in The Elder Scrolls Online. It's also been recently implemented in WoW. But I always forget that your MMORPG experience is by your own admission limited.

What is pointless for you may have a point for others.

Not everyone has only one friend, or friends only on one server, and not everyone can manage to bring all his friends to the same server, as they have friends of their own. Social networks are much more complex than two friends in a vacuum.

"why don't you gather all your friends?" or "why don't you go play where all your friends are" are disingenuous questions designed to portray an irrealistic situation as realistic.

Of course one has to actually have friends to understand that...

Go figure, you actually just contradicted your own opinion (incorrectly stated as fact) "in the future, anything is possible" is a direct contradiction to "not going to happen"

Ultimately you state it like it's fact, while it obviously isn't. This isn't for you to decide, and the technology allows it, so if Yoshida wakes up tomorrow morning and decides to implement it, he can.

So your "it's not gonna happen" is factually incorrect, and simply a projection of your personal wishes that you tend to confuse with fact.

One that is not being paid to write an article at the moment (well, not here at least). I'm not held by any standard when I post on a forum on my own time. I'm not here to work. Are you?

Anyway just to bring one easy example that I happen to have on hand (since it's my own interview):

"NY: Our server is designed in such way that it will be able to support those “worldless structures” down the line, but we don’t intend to make it available in the beginning.
There are certain elements that make MMOs interesting: having borders gives a sense of having a home, the ability for rankings among different worlds, PvP battles between the top players of each world, etc. For that reason, down the line, there are chances for the borders between servers to be further blurred but for the immediate future it will be operated on a per server basis."

He's obviously not excluding anything for the future, and so shouldn't you. It may not happen, but at the moment we have no element that eliminates the possibility, quite the opposite, so stating "not gonna happen" like it was fact is factually incorrect. All we know is that it won't happen "for the immediate future", which is a quite short time for a MMORPG.

As a matter of fact, you don't have the inside knowledge or the authority to exclude anything. For what you know, Yoshida could decide to scrap the whole server structure first thing in the morning. So you may as well stop presenting your personal speculation as fact.

You can believe it won't happen as much as you like, as much as I'm completely entitled to believe that Yoshida and team will get to it when things will have stabilized after launch, and they'll have the time to sit back and think about further innovations to the system.

Neither of us can know for sure, so you may want to stop acting like you do.

i have to agree on Abrial here, what GW2 did is awesome. Able to play with anyone you may know in other server at ease. No need to create another character for the sake of playing with other friends. is too time consuming just to level another Alt.
