I finally saw the video dedicated to showing off how the controller works with the game... and I can't even conceive how difficult it's going to be for me to play using a gamepad now if I'm restricted to just using the gamepad macro settings and skill selection.
In FFXI and FFXIV 1.0, when I played with the gamepad, I used it primarily to move around and do simple tasks. When it came to combat, I used keyboard macros or I just used the d-pad to scroll to a skill and select it. Now it looks as if the ability to do those things is gone.
I was waiting for it to be covered in the video, and unless I blanked out and missed it, I saw no mention of using the keyboard alongside the gamepad, allowing me to play the way I've been used to for the last decade. I'm sure to some people, having the L2 or R2 button held down for long periods of time is fine, but I find it uncomfortable.
I just want the normal action bar to be there and to have the ability to use my d-pad to scroll through it. Left or right selects the skill. Up and down changes the macro set. One button press activates the highlighted skill.
That's all I want.

They made it pretty clear they were bringing controls back from 1.0 into the game. The last paragraph is not how its going work anymore though, if you've ever played TERA thats how the gamepad is being modeled after, a two-button press scheme to use different abilities, this greatly increases the amount of moves you can do with a gamepad.

There will be, if you check the Producer Live Q&A there a neat feature where you can pick Legacy Config, this thing make your keyboard/mouse control like 1.0, but ofcourse you still need to map some key bindings thou!
Althou i play with gamepad only just fine really, can't wait to play with the new Gamepad UI! -

I'm gonna guess the the default setup for controller will be what was shown for the PS3. I hope that on the PC at least I can default the Mouse and KB settings while using a controller. I find moving a character in 3rd person perspective easier with a controller then with a mouse and KB, but I want the quick use of KB macro keys to do things like opening menus and using abilities. Hitting one button is way faster then hitting a few buttons. Menus as in inventory, character status, config, etc.
