Questions on security tokens

I got one from the beginning but I have never used it because I was never sure what exactly will happen if I lose it, break it or it runs out of battery.

Would someone please share some information over the device?

I lost mine. Or rather one of my children decided to hide it in the fireplace.

I didn't play for three weeks while it was lost, because once you de-register it, you can't then re-register it back on to your account. However, after three weeks, i needed my fix. I raised a ticket with S-E and they took it off my account within an hour. Fortunately, i had a second one (FFXIV CE), so I could register that straight away to keep my account secure, but otherwise, if you wanted the security I guess you'd have to buy another.

Of course, fast forward two weeks and the weather's getting cold. As I'm preparing the fireplace for the first time that year, I notice my old security token in the fire grate. I still have that and it still functions, but as far as I've been told, I can't ever register it to another S-E account.

Also apparently if it doesn't work or runs out of batteries within the first three months you bought the token they will give a you a new one free of charge...

Some benefits of the device is the extra security since you'll have an extra password that changes every 30 seconds. This will stop SE from ever changing your password whenever you try to log in a different IP address you usually log in with. In ffxi, if you have a token registered to your account you get an extra mog sachet so you can hold double the max capacity of your bag.

Really the only bad thing is that you need it whenever you want log on. So if you want to log into the forum you need the token, to log into the game you need the token, to log into the management system you need the token, so it at times feels like a hassle since I need to often find it. This may become less of a hassle if you connect the token to your key, however.

I used mine during the duration of 1.0, save some breaks in between patches, and it's still going strong.

The Battery should last ages. I've had mine since they were released and it's still working.

It can be a hassle using the codes to log in like kirito said. if you log into to the lodestone you'll need it. the forums you'll need it again. billing again etc. some of those arent so bad depending on your internet settings.

But yeah they rotate a 6 digit password every minute or so. but typically any password will work for around 5 or 10 minutes to account for loss of syncronisation between the time on your key and the time on the server.

I'd personally recommend using it if you have it. takes an extra 10 seconds to log into the game but makes it a damn site harder to be hacked and lose all your characters hard work.

One thing I raised the concern now is because while I haven't been using it and have only pressed the button less than 10 times, it will be close to 2 years old by the time ARR launches.

Really the token is for if your traveling a lot, want the extra security, want the mog sachel or just like ff14 stuff... If you have a relatively strong password and not traveling often you don't really need it. I'm also still using my CE, although I just bought the sealed CE about 4 months ago...

I just hope they make an phone app like swtor
