i enjoy playing ffxiv so much but i was thinking... is it possible to attack by clicking a keyboard button or a mouse button instead of auto attacking .. thought it would be more fun :)

It would be a pretty big change in game style. Its one I'd like to see because I love positional flowing combat - but I think the general FFXIV crowd would be overwhelmed and or is not their cup of tea.
So.. I think it could be done but with like 1% chance of happening lol -

that would only make sense if attack speed was faster. For lancer it's 3sec CD on normal attacks, so it would be pretty boring to only be able to click a button to do normal attack every 3 second. You could just skip normal attack altogether, and just use skills instead then.

At first glance it sounds like going from Dragon Age combat to Dragon Age 2 combat. I did not enjoy that change, personally. I didn't even bother to finish the second game because of it.

They had this.. It was called FFXIV 1.0.. It was garbage. XIV is no longer a "real time action" MMO, thank god... Spamming a button just to hit stuff gets insanely annoying in an MMO in my opinion.

I can't comment on alpha gameplay (hi NDA) except for what was in the combat videos, but they have it balanced in ARR pretty well, I think you will enjoy it. -

I think it has a lot to do with the system and how I'm posed when using that system. I'm okay being required to mash to make progress (sometimes) if I'm half-laying down and have a controller, but obligatory "rapid-same-button-press or fail" mechanics (as opposed to well timed and combined mechanics) are obnoxious when I'm sitting down at the PC with a keyboard and mouse. "Action" becomes "Man, this is tiring."
Clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick ... click menu, click exit.
How long do you think you could keep up the mash in a fight that takes you a lot of tries to learn? You should never be so tired of playing that you have to switch hands.
