So Dragon Quest X is big hit and looks like FFXI is being strong also now this may not be related to FFXIV!. But not done yet i hope FFXIV ARR will least hold 600k-800k sub, i hoping we can match FFXI with that 600k or more it be nice if i see a report in 2013 FFXIV make awesome come back, I can see now how they can dish out all this repiar also.

There's nothing "only" about 600k. That's quite an impressive number considering most of those subs were 2-4 years long.

Not every game needs WoW's numbers to be successful. Considering FFXI has been their biggest moneymaker, 600k is pretty damn impressive.

oh don't get me wrong FFXI in 5years having that many sub pay more then enough and today made even more profit then i think any game SE sold. But with 1-3m Strong players could make FFXIV more profit seeing how they lost so much money making two Final Fantasy XIV .

The sad part was i thought it was little more.

For the sake of profit for SE I hope they do very well in the coming years with XIV. But what is worrying to me, perhaps I'm wrong, but having subscribers in the several millions may not benefit the game. Business-wise it would be a wet dream but the integrity of the game may spiral downwards to cater to the masses or what is perceived to be the masses. It's a complicated issue but I think basically when you have a lot of people on a forum complaining about difficulty being too high or the wish to have certain things made easier (like teleporting to areas instead of walking there/taking boat or something), eventually this may lead to the deterioration of the game.

I feel like WoW was taken over by the suggestions of young people who don't know what they're talking about or those who want a quick 'get-in, get-out' style of play. That game in its current state has changed in nearly every way to please those kinds of people because they are in the majority, or maybe just the majority of the forum posters. If SE does one day reach huge numbers I just hope they won't kneel to those who insist on instant gratification. Making everything simple only leads to a dumbed-down, diluted experience. I only hope.

It says FFXI peaked at 600k. I don't think that's where it is now. I believe its highest population was several years back. It held steady at around 500k (still a very respectable number) up to about 7 years into its service. XI's population has been declining in the past few years.

But I agree,there's nothing bad about 600k, or even 500k players. People's idea of what "successful" is has been skewed horribly by WoW.

WoW is an anomaly. Not a standard. It's had a bad effect on the genre as a whole, however, because companies who previously had no interest in MMORPGs (they'd had almost a decade to hop on the bandwagon, but didn't) suddenly wanted a piece of the pie. And when "making as much money as possible" is your core goal, you tend to "emulate what the successful people are doing" - hence we started to see a deluge of "me-too" WoW clones. Even as one attempt after another failed to come even close to matching WoW's success (FFXI actually maintained a higher population than many of them), the companies just kept rolling them out, absolutely certain that "numbers don't lie" and that if they just gave people what their "market research" indicated players wanted, they'd be successful.

More and more players saying, "Please, no more WoW clones. Give us something different", with the developers/publishers saying, "oh no no no.. see our numbers tell us that more WoW-like gameplay is exactly what you want! So we'll just put a little twist on it and shovel out yet another one!" The growing list of MMOs that failed to even make a dent in the genre, much less a splash says it all.

The problem is, the people making the decisions and calling the shots and controlling the money have no freaking clue about the MMO genre. What they *should* be doing is looking to the past to see what older MMOs did to make the genre exciting to begin with. What was it about Ultima Online and Everquest 1 that got some people at Blizzard so excited about the genre that they set out to make a MMO of their own? What is it that keeps people playing the game for months, or even years? What creates that "keeping" power?

The cynical answer is "oh because they make the game an endless grind so it takes you that long". That's not the right answer. If you're not enjoying the game enough to keep playing it at all, then how long the grind is really doesn't mean much. You likely aren't going to be playing it anyway.

Every time a developer comes forth and says "we have it all figured out! We know what gamers want!" I get a little bit excited.. then I hear what their idea is.. and just think "Nope. They don't get it, either".
