Predatory Urgency and Theft
The 35-day timer to retrieve your items has no functional or performance purpose. The items stored inside could very well be sitting untouched in an inventory.
The need for demolition is a gameplay solution to free up housing lots, not a player choice. The reason a house gets demolished is often out of the player’s control. In those cases specifically, I’d consider it predatory to urge players to pay money - not only for a subscription, but also for extra storage - just to secure their items. The reasons for wanting to secure items can be sentimental or monetary, such as paid items from the Mog Station, trophies, or timed rewards.
The argument that these are digital goods and therefore hold no value doesn’t hold up, and it’s negligible when the alternative is simply removing the limit - a limit that doesn’t serve any definitive purpose, like easing server load. Every player who quits keeps their retainers, inventories, progress, and bags intact; nothing is deleted, and it all remains untouched. I’d argue that a text list of items wouldn’t make a meaningful difference there.
To prevent abuse, the limit could be that only one house’s worth of items is stored at a time, so people don’t use it as deep cold storage.
This solution would require changing the system, but it would remove the extortion-like “pay us or lose all your stuff” situation that’s currently happening.
If there are any concerns, I’m happy to hear them. I hope my post wasn’t too strongly worded. I wish you all a nice day.
