Thaumaturge setup
I'm trying to get the most I can for my THM (before Vanya) and here's what I have so far:
Lightning Brand (M Acc +12 Materia)
Gridanian Square Shield (replacing MH and OH for Mogstaff)
Felt Cavalier's Hat (Magic Acc +12)
Felt Bliaud (Piety +13) (replacing for Gridanian Officer Overcoat)
Coliseum Loincloth (INT/Piety +7)
Fingerless Raptorskin Gloves (Will be replacing for Gridanian Officer Gloves)
Serpent Sergeant's Jackboots
Raptorskin Satchel Belt (Enmity -9)
Serpent Sergeant's Bracelets
Serpent Sergeant's Earrings
Spinel Choker
Coral Ring
Coral Ring +1
Current stats are as follows:
Intelligence: 282 (+23)
Mind: 257 (+22)
Piety: 257
AMP: 474
M Acc: 477
What should I do to better optimize my THM before I attempt for some Vanya gear? Could the set up also benefit BLM as well?

I would recommend stacking M acc materia on your hat, Int on your thm weapon and legs, and AMP on your feet, Crit on your hands. Get the Militia Robe (From Grid Hamlet) and Mage's Rope Belt from a dungeon (I think it's Cutter's Cry) or Gridanian Belt from GC. Then HQ Zircon Bracelet and rings and Mages Choker. For shield, use the HQ Vintage Square or Aubriest's Allegory.

If i were to use Moogle staff for my weapon, how would that affect the materia set up?
Also I now feel pretty silly buying those GC things without considering melding, lol. Nothing Caravans can't fix though.
But rather then militia robe, could I use the grid officer's coat in place for when i need to change to DRG/MNK/BRD mid dungeon (mostly since my LSs aren't able to perrform hamlets quite yet)

Melding can be expensive. :) If you don't meld, I would recommend joining a pickup party for Hyrstmill Hamlet run anyway. If you get 60k points a Militia hat will drop guaranteed. At Int+20 it's a free item worth Tier IV single meld (Int IVs will run you almost 400k on my server!). With M. Acc, Int and Crit rate, Militia Robe is hard to beat in my book, but Grid Coat is definitely 2nd best (I'm Maelstrom so I don't have a choice anyway!).
Mogstaff is okay I guess... but I like one-handed weps so I can wear a shield.

If only PUGs in Ragnarok weren't so terrible >< even 50 body quests are a complete chore with PUGs
-
I feel your pain. :(
I recommend that you do PUGs for Hamlet tho, because the gear is good. Keep a running Friends List of the more skilled people. That way you can build your party up a bit stronger and get those good drops.

Next time I see a shout for a hamlet I'll consider it, but sadly 9 times out of 10 they want "experienced only"
I guess for now the good thing to do would be to go with the grid body, put materias on other pieces and focus on jewelry for now
-
Experienced only is easy to get around. Just lie. :P
-
Time to research all WHMs need to do during Hamlets then, lol, or get a DoL to 50 quickly
