Solo Duty: The oracle of light

Hello All

This time, I have a question, but different than usual: I won a fight and I don't understand why.

The issue: I was - once more - forced by the MSQ (Shadowbringer) to a solo duty. I did some fighting, with a last step during which I was alone against a boss called Ran'jit. I spent it mostly running out of AOEs, and after a long while, suddenly, he got me down while his own health was still around 90% (not surprising since I could hardly fight him back). Although that, the duty was declared successful! What? :confused:

My question: Why was the duty successful? The boss, with still 90% health got me down, but I won? I fail to understand something and would be happy if someone could please explain?

I don't remember this duty too well, but so far as I recall it was simply a classic case of the story pulling the 'Not Worth Killing' trope:

It's basically a scripted outcome. Much like the fight Vs Zenos during "In Crimson it Began" (Stormblood).

The "success" is that you survived the encounter. There are more than a few solo duties with this type of ending in later expansions, generally with recurring villains.

Sometimes, this game makes you lose as part of the story. Usually if they have most HP still then they found a way to make themselves hard to defeat (in the story) so it ends the duty and the story plays off the idea they beat you up.

I suppose I failed to see/hear the info from NPC(s). It's' not first time, due to me being so much concentrated on the fight. I have now changed the NPC announcement text color to something flashy (it was dark blue making it hard to read during fighting). I hope it will help next time.
