Is there a reason my retainers cannot gather optical fiber?
I assume you're talking about Optical Fibergrass. You can scroll down to the Acquisition section to find out how to get it, but it looks like it's just not available to retainers at all. Here's a list of all the botany ventures and their loot tables.
Retainers can never bring back the latest legendary items. And when they do get added, the maximum yield is 9. Which can't even be reached with current gear. You are much better off just going smacking the node yourself.
