Before we had Relic, we had a whole new set of weapons come out, required brand new items to synth them together and once you had the finished product, that item was then used towards the Relic itself.
What I'm curious about and sort of would like to see SE do in some fashion, is utalize thew newest weapons that were released in 1.23.. the giantsgall set.
By the lore, the giantsgall is derived from a special stone that absorbed a giant's strength and gall, thus it got its name. So what if the absorption properties still exist in the stone forged weapons we now have?
We could have ourselves a particular series of quests for instance, revolving around Dalamud and the meteorites it has been shooting down all over Eorzea, using the weapons to absorb that power into the weapon, allowing it to become something more. A limited time thing, only available between now and when 2.0 beta takes off.. not a huge window of opportunity, but something I thought to share.

The content has RNG drops because we're in 1.0, if RNG drops are around in 2.0 then I'll quit and lots of others will as well. RNG loot has no place in 2012 MMO's
However, just because something is shitty to get doesn't mean it's not worth getting and the content is not worth experiencing. On that same token, it doesn't mean you instantly devalue content by replacing it with things you can buy without ever participating. -

I think what OP meant was, 'Wouldn't it be cool if the Skirmish relics were 'base' weapons towards a better one too.' One that maybe had a simliar, but smaller questline akin to the 'Relic Reborn' quest. So that they'd still be less awesome than relic, but not waste a storyline opportunity.
But yeah, I think the intent of these weapons was 'solid' weapons for those without other options...or for those who just don't want to play 'russian roulette' with Primals/ or crafting melded weapons. So basically, you're both right, yes it would have been cool if Skirmish weapons had a greater purpose and no, they don't need to over-power harder to earn weapons...especially due to 1.xx constriants. -

Not a bad idea, though, but I think we already have way too many high-level weapons right now, and most of them people don't use at all.
Dungeon drops from CC,AV,DH, Skirmish, 3 sets of primal weapons, crafted weapons, GC weapons, relics. . . . -

Kinseykinz had the right of it, that I was referring (though I suppose I did it sort of ambigiously and should've tried to be less vague, my bad) to how the relic's used a base weapon and were eventually upgraded into a new form. That the giantsgall weapons could have a similiar purpose - do we even know if Skirmish is going to exist beyond 2.0, seeing as how this is a training ground sort of thing? I suppose it could be, since the war against the empire should still be on-going when we get back into 2.0's world.
It was more for a storyline type of thing, where more unique gear had a lore related purpose to it. Not to mention, unless I'm mistaken, there's no real specific reason why we have Primal weapons (again unless I'm mistaken..) I dont recall seeing anything that says that Ifrit pulled a piece of his own flesh apart and shaped it into weapons that still burned with his own fiery essence when engaged with your enemies, or if the Moogle King severed the heads of his own moogle subjects or those that went rouge and skewered their heads on the end of fists, or that Garuda pulled her own wings apart and forged weapons out of her own flesh as Ifrit did... for the case of lore, the Primal weapons are just a prize.
So seeing weapons and such that are tied to the world around us in some way and can be shaped or reshaped into unique final products would be interesting.
