What is the point of Shared Estate rights?

I thought it was designed for folks to share rights and the ability to keep a home in case of an emergency (I.e the owner is unable to log in for 45+ days due to an emergency), but that doesn't seem the case. Is it only to block people?

Shared Estates are good for a few things.

You may own a house, and not do gardening, but your friend may want to. I'm sure there's some RP tied to that specific situation as well.
You got a house in the spot you always wanted.. start to try and deco it and realize you aren't super good at decorating, you hire a decorator , or have a friend come in and decorate it.

A couple playing FFXIV together decide to share a house. One of the people who mentioned I try ffxiv out gave me full housing rights to his house for like the first 2 years I played. I've moved worlds, made other alts, and been all over, and no longer on his house but we're still great mates, and meet up and do dungeons and treasure maps together, almost on the weekly. I'd say that one experience helped make me a long term subscriber, and interested me in housing the most. Probably one of the 'warmest' social experiences I can recall from this game, outside of starting and leading my own FC.

One thing I've done to help people learn how to float is add them to my house and let them practice with a stage panel and wooden loft or riviera wall shelf, and out of maybe 7 or so that I did 5 actually learned how to do it and still deco houses and send me pictures of stuff they deco'd occassionally. I do think it's stiff tho, that a friend can't 'update' a house to keep it fresh, even if were just a 1 time deal. Kind of reminds me of old school ultima online, where a friend could open the door to your house and reset the decay timer in case you were on a deployment or couldn't log in for medical reasons. There was a big house a friend I knew got, and he met a woman from the game and they eloped. I kept going to his castle full of rare items and refreshing but I forgot to and he lost everything. I never heard from that guy tho, after he and she eloped. Maybe he finally found the treasure he was really looking for tho.

The newly added ability to give Estate rights to another person through shared rights is what confuses me.

yeah it looks like it only revolves around letting people have authority to ban unwanted people from an estate.. Here is the information straight from the patch notes..

""To bar a character from your property, you must first be on your estate grounds and have the requisite authority. Target the character you wish to bar, and select "Bar from Property" in the subcommand menu, then choose "Register as Barred Character." They will be ejected from the estate grounds and moved to the housing area entrance.

Barred characters will remain on the Barred Characters list for 10 days. During this time, any attempts to enter your estate hall or garden will instead transport them to the housing area entrance.

To view or adjust these settings, select Housing from the Social menu, followed by Estate Settings, then Estate Holder Rights. Authorization settings will differ according to the type of residence.

Free Company Estate
The free company master is the main rightsholder, and may appoint up to four free company members as secondary rightsholders.

Personal Estate
The estate owner is the main rightsholder, and may appoint up to three tenants as secondary rightsholders.

Apartment / Private Chambers
The apartment or private chambers owner is the main rightsholder, and cannot appoint secondary rightsholders.

It should be noted that, when secondary rightsholders with the setting enabled are present on an estate, characters on their blacklist may also be denied access to the property. Which rightsholders' blacklists will be included to determine who is barred from the estate may be adjusted via the Estate Holder Rights window.""

It is just a measure to release the stress on housing.
The idea is simple, not many actually interesting in house decoration but this allows them a chance to taste the housing

Easy tp for those chars that haven't unlocked that region's main aetheryte yet.

Shared Estate settings never allowed players to bypass the demolition provisions. The owner is and always has been the only one that can reset the demo timer on entry.

It exists to allow owners to share their house with another player(s). It could be someone helping a friend that hasn't been able to get a house of their own or doesn't play often enough to avoid having one demo, a married couple that want to share a house in game, or other reasons. The owner can control which features of house ownership the other player(s) have access to (stable and garden but not furnishing placement/removal as an example).

It was never about "blocking" other players. That's a new feature added with the Blacklist revamp this expansion and separate from the Shared Estate settings.
