Current MSQ Structure is a diamond in the rough

In the latest expansion, the storytelling approach for the MSQ feels somewhat outdated. It harkens back to the early days of the game, resembling the formulaic structure of “go here, talk to an NPC, click on a shiny object three times, then return to the NPC.” While this format has been consistent across previous expansions, it’s particularly noticeable now, especially considering the grand scale of world-ending events and cosmic threats we’ve faced in the past.

I think we could improve the overall experience without changing too much:

Streamline the MSQ: Consider reducing the overall length of the MSQ. By doing so, players won’t feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of quests. Shorter, more focused segments could maintain engagement and prevent fatigue.

Gated Quests: Introduce level-based gating for MSQ quests. This approach ensures that players progress at a steady pace, unlocking new story content as they reach specific levels. Each quest should be concise and impactful, with voice acting to enhance immersion. We could fill in the XP with fates, duties and my next point...

Side Quests with Purpose: Rather than relegating side quests to a pittance of XP and gold rewards. Make them relevant by giving more XP and encourage us to do them so we feel invested in the folks of the area. Some of these side stories are genuinely captivating, while others fall flat. But I at least chose the way to do them instead of
being compelled to assist every random NPC with festival planning, or a cheer up session. Let us decide which side quests align with our interests. This agency would make the experience more personal and enjoyable.

In summary, a revamped MSQ structure that balances brevity, voice acting, and purposeful side quests could significantly enhance the overall storytelling in FFXIV. By empowering players to make meaningful choices, we’d feel more invested in the journey.

I just really love this game, and I'm having a very hard time with getting through the MSQ right now, as every side diversion feels so... unimportant.
