Each expansion gives plenty of new crafting materials, but the inventory of the player and the retainers stays the same, making it more and more difficult to keep a store of everything, without getting more and more retainers, which cost real money.
Any chance you could at some point increase the retainer inventory, or make some kind of seperate inventory, only for crafting materials, like for example Guild Wars 2 has?
Inventory space requests for crafting materials (and fishing tackle) come up frequently and are always given the same response by SE: if they're able to add more inventory space to characters/retainers, it will be general use and not restricted to specific types of items. Different players have different priorities for the items they want to be storing and they're not going to favor one type of player over another.
You do not have to keep everything as a crafter. Keep the items you use on a regular basis or that are very hard to obtain. If you need a few of something you're not storing, go on a quick gathering/farming trip or buy from a vendor/marketboard.
It's also a bad decision when it comes to making gil. Everything sitting unused in your inventory represents gil being lost for the sake of future gil savings that may never happen when the item continues to sit unused. If you're choosing what you craft to sell wisely, you should always be able to sell the crafted item for more than you pay to purchase the materials needed to make it. Sell off the materials that you're not using so you have more room for the ones that you are.
yeah, although it's a bit hypocritical of me to say right now should you look at my retainers, anything that's an "easy gather" (not timed, not Heavensward Hidden, not in the Sea of [meep]ing Clouds) should probably just be vendored
