Did you have multiple duties selected by accident when you tried to queue for the extreme trial? It's pretty common for people to accidentally queue for their previous trial or dungeon alongside a newly unlocked one.
Extreme trials are very unlikely to come up through the duty finder. Try checking the party finder or start your own listing there.
