Black Mage or Dragoon?
Hello,
I'm a bit of an altoholic by nature and have difficulties sticking to jobs for extended periods of time. This decision is predicated on the fact I'm progging through savage right now, and I feel like it's not really feasible to gear for multiple different roles within any reasonable timeframe. I'm mainly curious what peoples' thoughts are on the jobs, but I will share some of my reasoning to maybe give more context:
- I tend to enjoy gameplay that's more thoughtful and requires decision making. I would say I slightly prefer BLM over DRG gameplay-wise but my issue with BLM is it feels like on occasion some fights are just needlessly difficult and cumbersome for BLM to deal with, and because I don't really have premades to play with I have inconsistent experiences in PF where sometimes there is nobody I can trust to AM to to ensure I get good uptime on certain mechanics, lol. I also eventually want to try out ultimates but I looked at some of the mechanics in the more modern ones and got spooked over the idea of figuring out how you are supposed to manage good uptime on BLM in there
- I like how I can use the same gear for the entire caster role in theory, but in reality it seems like every caster role has different melding priorities. Maiming on the other hand gives me 2 options but BiS is almost completely identical, just with an extra sks meld slapped on to help with cd alignment for reaper. Plus, I am having a hard time appreciating summoners' gameplay...
Just curious what peoples' thoughts are. I enjoy both jobs. I've only done p9s and p10s on both DRG and BLM and they were pretty easy to clear once I found people in pf that could do spread/stack mechanics consistently, if that helps roughly gauge where my skill level with these jobs is.

I would go BLM from what youve said. If you want thoughtful gameplay where you have to think about what youre doing and plan ahead, then thats what BLM is all about, its basically where the entirity of BLMs challenge comes from.
Regarding gear, you will typically go for a spell speed or a spell power build. I believe power builds are more at the top end of players though, so not great for learning or progging. This means other caster gear probably wont be optimal for you.
In terms of getting spooked and your other concerns... thats BLM and where your payoffs are. You have high damage output and a fairly simple toolkit when it comes down to it. Your challenge comes from trying to maintain uptime through mechanics, timing and forward planning. Thats your trade off.
Maybe try taking it into some previous expanasion content MINE and see how you go.

I have the same "problem" for some month. Except, that i dont do savage and so one.
The same reason like both classes are the same reason, why i evolved some dislike to the other class.
I like the blm, because i simply love the idea of beeing a wizard. And his fire is nice to watch.
He is slower as the most other classes. And you are mostly using only one skill, before you use one other skill and than again the first skill (to say it simple).
That allows me, to keep a little track about the surrounding and watching the mechanic (in shb was it the other side, where i had to watch about so many skills of blm and any other caster, that i forgot my surrounding and lost the ability to play any caster around lvl 75).
Downside is, that i maybe lost track of my timers and dont find time to cast. But that is mostly by new content.
The biggest downside of the blm, that he can becomes boring, when you dont have to watch for things and has than only to do to press allways fire4. And, he can than feel very slow (even, when half of my materia are spell speed and have a cast time of around 2,22 to 2,52).
The dragoon feels like the complet opposite (even, when the monk is faster).
He is fast, very streamlined, where you has to press many skills after the other in a good flow, and some skills are nice to watch.
In term of Action is the dragoon the better choice.
Downside of him, for me, is his action and speed.
Im sometimes so much in the flow or so busy, to use any skills, that i lose track of my surrounding and missing to dodge aoe atttacks. Even, when this movements and his jumps sometimes help to survive things. And, i have the feeling, that its not good for my mouse, to press all the buttons so fast.^^
Both feels equal and the decicion is mostly by you, what you prefer.
In my case did i think, that i prefer more the mage. Even when the fast gameplay is nice, most of the time, has i the feeling again, that the slower gameplay and the ability, to hit with the same dmg from each distance, suit me more. I have the feeling, that i make than less errors. As, with the meele.
