So, this particular button drives me NUTS and really seems to serve no useful purpose.
Upon clicking "visit another world server" from character tab on login screen - you are instantly transported to a random server on your data center... (no confirm button if you mis-clicked the travel button) once you have been transported to another (random) world, you cannot use the 'return to home world' feature from login, you must log in and physically return your character to its home world via aetheryte in game.
This would not be so annoying if this useless button was not directly above the very useful "visit another data center" button...
The only time i have ever used the 'visit another world server' button has been when i am actually trying to travel to another data center and mis-clicked. then forcing the scenario above of having to relog into game, transfer to home world via aethy, log back out then correctly click the DC travel button.
As i do a lot of DC traveling, i have made this mistake more times than i'd like to admit haha... but honestly after doing it again last night i was left wondering what is the point of being sent to a random world on your server anyway? who uses this button on purpose & why?
and if anyone from squeenix notices this - please fix the functionality of this button with a confirm button and/or ability to 'return to home world' from login screen! I beg you!

It's come in handy when I've run into the "unexpected error" crash to desktop loop. Ideally a clean reinstall fixes it but it's been really useful to get away from whatever area is causing the problem. i've had it happen in treasure map portals, zadnor and raktika [that one was during msq on patch day recently and did require an immediate reinstall] granted that's probably not it's intended use, though x_x

It's so you can log in during periods of high congestion - patch days sometimes, but mostly expansion launches. The randomness is to help spread the server load.

The point is to address issues with logging in. For example, if you crash whenever you login, using this option can transport you to another location that doesn't crash you, allowing you to fix the problem without the help of GMs. I frequently suggest this to people who are having crash issues and it helps them a lot and alongside other things, has been part of their solution.
Another reason is if your server is congested, then you can transfer to a less congested world this way so you don't have as large of a login queue. -
