Is it possible to remap the controls when playing as Thancred etc.

Just got to the quest in Stormblood where you have to play as another character, and found myself struggling.
I have a somewhat weird setup with a Kinesis keyboard and a footpedal for accessibility reasons. Most of my hotbars only have 6 out of the 12 slots mapped to actual keys (buttons 2,3,4,5,6 & 9 on a 3x4 hotbar). Hotbar 1 only has 4 keys mapped, and they're in an awkward position 2 rows below my movement key.

This is fine except now I have 5 abilities dumped into hotbar 1 where I can't use them at the same time as moving, and only 4 of them available on keys, with mouse clicks needed for the last one! For the first time I actually had to lower a duty difficulty level to get through the thing, but would like to do them properly. Is there any way to control where these go, and move them to other hotbars?

Might you benefit from re-rowing your bars? For example, I only use numbers 12345 and sometimes 6, and 0-=, so my bars are laid out like this:

So even though it looks like I'm using four full bars on my screen, I'm actually only using three, and what the game calls bar 1 looks and feels like the 1-6 keys of what is visually bar 1 and bar 2 on my screen.

I know it's a pain to reconfigure when you already have everything how you want it for the vast majority of the game, but there's probably some row configuration that'll let you still use the exact keys you want on the same visual layout that you want, but that leaves your most-used keys bound to what the game thinks of as bar 1, and you'd only have to do the big reconfiguration once. There also might* be macros we can use to automate the reorganization of your old bars into the new bars so you just have to press it once on each job to get everything where it's supposed to be in the new configuration.

*For example, if your most used keys are on bar 2, macro swapping bar 2 with bar 1 on every job is a fairly trivial matter. Then the only things you would have to manually do are swap all the binds for bar 1 and bar 2 and swap their layouts in /hudlayout. And after performing these swaps, your UI would function exactly as it used to except all your future RP fights will use your main bar instead of an awkward bar. A more complicated rebarring (e.g., combining two bars into one so that game bar 1 acts like two of your current bars) would be more annoying because half of each bar would have to be copied manually but still only something you'd have to handle once for each job.

I did originally have HB1 in the top position, where the keys are marginally less annoying, because up until that point the only time it was an issue was MSQ roulette, but swapped it to the lower position because I got fed up of losing access to sprint and peloton every time my umbrella came out :D It's not a massive issue for Praetorium, because you only use positions 1 & 2, and only while walking forward.

It would make sense to have HB1 be where my primary attacks are, but because of the physical layout of this keyboard, and my need to have the hotbar roughly resemble the actual layout of my keys, position 1 doesn't have a keybind and goes unused, so if I made it my primary I'd not be able to hit the first ability in Prae, or indeed in these new (to me) "play as someone else" missions.

Really not sure where I go from here. I realise my setup is pretty unique (I can't really use standard keyboards) but to run into this problem 700 hours into the game is quite frustrating

Edit: Oh nuts, I misunderstood the part about mount actions in the first slot not being available. Sorry, it took me a few rereads to realize what you were talking about in re: "the first ability in Prae" and why the unbound slot1 mattered. Could you possibly work around this by binding [B] to slot 1 on your No Pedal bar? It's not part of that key cluster but it's the closest key on the keyboard to that position. If that would be okay, or if you can live without the #1 action when riding mounts*, my original solution below will work, with the optional addition of "On each job, move your [B] action to slot1 on your No Pedal bar."

*The Magitek Reaper's frontal line #2 attack is still an attack and one party member using it instead of the #1 ground target action is unlikely to change the runtime of Praetorium. Mount actions in combat are only a thing in like...one? other fight in the game that I can think of. One of the Alexander raid floors, and due to overgearing it's not necessary for anyone to operate the mount anymore, so this should only be a problem if you ever wanted to do that specific fight at Min IL No Echo. Mount actions are used in Allied Tribe quests, but those are low pressure contexts where it's okay to take your time to click an action if necessary.

Okay! So it sounds like this is a pretty easy fix but stop me if I'm reading this wrong.

1. Change hotbar 1 to 3x4 and move it to where your No Pedal bar is.
2. Change your No Pedal bar to 6x2 and move it where hotbar 1 currently is
3. If hotbar 1 is Shared (uncertain from pic) Swap the Share settings for the two bars. It will look like you lost one or both bars, but you didn't; they're just hidden and you'll fix that in the final step.
4. Swap the keybinds for the two bars.
5. Once on each job, run a bar swapping macro to transfer the action/item buttons between the two bars.

and then everything will look and feel exactly as it did before except your main no pedal bar will be bar 1.

If you tell me the hotbar number for your No Pedal bar and confirm the Sharing state of hotbar 1, I can give you the exact bar swapping macro you need.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply. I think I'm going to just accept that I'll lose ground targeting in Praetorium, and swap the bars. It's 1 & 5 if you're still willing to give me a swap macro.
These play as another character fights are getting more frequent, and really starting to do my head in now :D

I'll have to figure something else out when I come to do Alexander Savage if the tanks are still an issue

Do consider the [b] option though! If it's a key you don't use often you won't lose much by rebinding it to the 1 slot on your main bar for mount usability.

I still can't tell if your bar 1 is shared or not so here's both versions.

If hotbar 1 is not shared

Run this once on each class/job:

This uses the hidden shared 1 bar as a buffer while you swap job bar 1 and job bar 5.


If hotbar 1 is shared

You'll seem to lose bars 1 and 5 at the beginning but they've just been hidden, and this will copy them from their old now-hidden locations to their new visible locations.

I did consider the B option, the problem is, and I realise it's not very clear from a top down picture of the keyboard, but I'll end up going for it with my thumb if it's there, and B is not really pressable with my thumb as there's quite a significant difference in the angle the keys lie at. I'd post a picture that makes it make more sense, but my keyboard is 17 years old (not a typo) and looks horrid :D

Macro makes a lot of sense, I didn't realise there was a copy function. I'll set about swapping those over and see how it goes. Sorry to anyone who meets me in Praetorium for my upcoming lack of ground strikes :D

Ahh the irony. I finally do this, and then I reach the Nier raids where the same issue as Praetorum applies. FML :D
