I think Criterion Dungeons might be used to wrap up some loose ends if Sil'dih is anything to go by which has been mentioned since 1.0?
Its worthy to note there was a Mine underneath Ul'dah in 1.0, and I'm starting to suspect it would had something to do with Sil'dih at the time (just a guess, nothing is actually known about that Mining Dungeon).
So going by this here are my theories:
Kan-E-Senna & Gelmorra:
I suspect at some point in the future will finally get to uncover what exactly Gelmorra was, and in 1.0 we were supposed to explore a dungeon that involved Gelmorra somewhere in the West Shroud (it was called the Knights Round) according to the Speakers Network on youtube.
Aymeric & The Dawn Vigil:
Little is actually known about the Dawn Vigil from 1.0, but it became lost after the calamity.
Merlwyb & The Bloodshore Hollow
There was quite a bit of dungeons in 1.0 La Noscea, most of which has become lost or re-worked into 2.0.
However there was a dungeon called the Bloodshore Hollow and deep inside the cave is a strange looking city-state that is very similar to Limsa Lominsa (showcased in the Speakers Network). A failed City-State of La Noscea would be pretty interesting to see.

Now here is the thing about the Stormblood Zones, there is so many underused locations that I don't know where to begin. It could honestly be anything that the Dev. Team couldn't implement at the time.
It could be that gigantic tree in the Fringes (there is a weird blocked entrance there)
It could be The Ziggurat in the Peaks
It could be anything in the Lochs (if I had to place bets it would be the crypt tunnels)
But if anything it would probably delve deep about the Mad King Theodoric (he would be interesting as a undead villain).
Gaius Van Baelsar & Garlemald:
Alright you all probably wondering why him? Honestly he fit well for a role in Criterion Dungeons.
I can't say for sure what in Garlemald's history would be of interest though.
Magnai & Underneath the Azim Steppe:
I think a lot of us have been wanting to know what the heck is underneath the Azim Steppe, its quite possible something large lays there besides what we know of it story-wise.

Honestly don't know, was there any unexplained areas of interest that could tie in with Hien?

don't recall much of what's "underneath" the steppe.., as it's been awhile.

unless you mean the large Aether collection thing used to power the barrier.., which I don't think you are.., <though searching the are would be interesting, but probably best to not do so, as I don't want to accidentally nuke the steppe>
VnC does cover alot of lore backstory..,
some which may tie into the msq, but largely just seems like filling out the lore and depth of the world.
I honestly feel like the Void Ark will play a role in the MSQ, as in the story we dont have Access to a certain place any longer.
as it had gone missing since 3.x
but that's probably unrelated to what the topic is about. which I feel is largely sidelore.
Gaius does feel like a good VnC source.
but what exactly idk. he didn't come to their homeland as it seemed to create assumptions of his being there. But with all said and done.., the wolf's must return to their birth den at some point. -

There are definitely some places that don't really have much to them... Maybe used in like 1 or 2 quests, or a fishing spot...
Maybe now that in the story the ARR Beast tribes are definitely on much friendlier terms, maybe could poke at some of their lore through Variant/Criterion Dungeons -

I just assumed that the other Variant/Criterion's would just be Nym and Amdapor, but drawing on missed content from 1.0 isn't a bad call. I would still place my bets on one in La Noscea and one in the Twelveswood though.

Some of the things you mentioned Kaliesto actually have been explained in the game at various times so I'll clarify what I know:
I don't recall any mention of this in 1.0, so I don't know what you are meaning by this - there was plenty of open 'public' dungeons scattered around though; the Nanawa Mines being an example, and there wasn't much in there, hence why that one didn't return in ARR - there was nothing setting it apart from Copperbell Mines. 'Public' dungeons in 1.0 tended to be samey and just a place to stick an NM (Notorious Monster, think Rank A/S Hunt monster) occassionally, which might have been what you were referring to.Quote:

We already know what Gelmorra is - it was basicsally an underground proto-Gridania, where the elezen and hyur lived before the moogles were able to intercede with the elementals for permission to settle in the Black Shroud. Having said that, some of the Gelmorran structures have been headscratchers even in 1.0 - the actual named Gelmorran Ruins' in the North Shroud specifically being an example - in 1.0 it was complete and was surrounded by amber statues that resembled tonberries. Now it's partially buried under rock and rubble, the amber things are gone, and most of the columns are broken and scattered around, so it doesn't resemble it's pre-Calamity appearence much.
