Rework sage

Sage is not remotely true to the established job in final fantasy. I therefore propose that it should be nuked harder than summoner and turned into the black-summoner-white-mage that it truly is. They could function as a healer that requires black magic spells to build toward summon tokens, which would be essentially 30/60/90/120s cooldowns. Naturally this would necessitate some way to rapidly build the tokens at the start of the fight - ie an actual opener. To avoid overcapping, a dps neutralish way to convert them into damage would also be needed. Beyond that the white magic could cover the standard healing e.g aoe heal/single target heal/same but ogcd/some kind of regen.

This would also allow the job to have names that aren't all greek to everyone, something that for obvious reasons should be reserved purely for the ancients and their nonsense.

If bootleg dark arts is integral, using a non-greek eukrasia could swap certain non-core spell effects between black magic/summons or similar.


This leaves scholar free to occupy the scholar niche, and ast can have sects once again.

Until sage was added Greek was reserved specifically for the ancients - hades, hythlodaeus, amaurot, titanomachy for example. Or in the current expansion kokytos, exoterikos, ania, styx, adikia, phlegeton (i.e the attacks used before amon fully takes over). Sage being entirely unrelated and also using the greek naming scheme undermines this, as would a job unrelated to the garleans using Latin. That sage doesn't even lean into the four humours beyond the surface level just adds to this blemish on the otherwise pretty consistent worldbuilding.

it does have phlegma (phlegm), haima (blood) and addersgall (gall bile). as the design stands i'd rather the four addersgall spenders (tauro/ixo/druo/kerachole) had been named after the four humours but it is what it is. but yeh its probably best not to look into skill names too much outside of 'it sounds cool' or you find out stuff like 'zwerchau is a longsword technique'

The entire point of sage and reaper was to be original and have nothing to do with established FF jobs traditionally...Sage lore is fine the way it is.

At the very least they should change the name to humourist or something, sage is an established job with a completely different identity so far removed from this that it's baffling they introduced it in the same breath as saying summoner wasn't summonery enough and so needed killed.

Again, Sage has no real identity

Sages are casters that can use all the schools of magic at the cost of being pretty terrible physically. It's a very established job, dating back to I think ff3 where it could use black, white and summoning magic, didn't have much mp, and was Noah's job in the story.

While on the surface it might seem to be red mage but better, it shouldn't detract from RDM as long as they try to fit it into another role (healer in this case).

point is it was only in FF3 and FFTA/TA2, it's not had that much of an appearance in the series compared to other stuff like BLM or RDM, so it's a lot more free to be whatever the devs want to make this version. Also what they did in FF3 is not the same as what they did in TA (where it had a weird mix of stuff like Water, Aero, Blind, Drain and a physical skill called Ultima Blow for some odd reason), so it's not like there's consistency, even between the two incarnations we've seen previously

you really want to add 'class that can use the best black magic, best white magic, AND best summons' and make it a healer? BLM WHM SMN and RDM mains would be livid, not to mention SGE themselves due to being 'the most powerful spellcaster' and being forced into healer DPS numbers. the devs have shown multiple times that they're willing to take creative liberties on 'identity' to make it fit an MMO better. RDMs dont use melee as much as they would in FF1 (due to MP limits), DRK uses MP instead of HP to fuel attacks so they dont spend before a raidwide and kill themselves, BLM doesn't use 'elemental weakness exploitation' as a thing anymore, etc. the only class that they're adamant must 'respect identity' seems to be BLU, and even then the 'identity' they are respecting (pick from a loadout) appeared in only one game, compared to 'there is a list of 20-25 skills, collect em all' from literally every other game with BLU in it
