What aspect does each job use?

I am curious to see what aspects/elements are associated with each job. This helps better understand not only job lore, but also the aspects themselves. I've only played mage classes, so I can tell the following:

CNJ/WHM: Earth, Wind, Water (pure white magic, i.e. life)
THM/BLM: Fire, Ice, Lightning (pure black magic, i.e. destruction)
RDM: Fire, Lightning, Earth, Wind (mix of white and black magic, two from each aspect)
ACN/SMN: Unaspected (user), but summons use Fire, Earth, Wind (mix of white and black magic)
SCH/AST/SGE: Unaspected
BLU: Everything

What about melee and crafting jobs, what aspects and aspected crystals do they rely on? Also, is there an astral/umbral dichotomy of aspects?

PLD: Holy/ Faith/ Willpower
DRK: Void/ Darkness/ Raw emotion
WRR: Berserk/ Rage/ Blood Lust

GnB: Unaspected? Cartridges invested with one’s aether/ Natural agile/ Marksmanship to a degree

Can’t think of the rest..

The various ninjutsu, BRD's Windbite and some DRG abilities are the only things on non-DoM jobs are stated to have an element as far as I recall.

Everything else is just referred to as either physical or unaspected damage, so I assume DRK/PLD are not actually manipulating dark/light despite what the visuals of their skills might suggest.

That may be from a gameplay perspective, but it's more complex than that when you look at it from a lore perspective. DRG, BRD, NIN, and MNK at least all have abilities that specifically state in their tool tip to do damage aspected to a certain element but the animations, names, and lore for other abilities infer if not outright state that they're aspected one way or another.


Besides the abilities like dragonfire dive and stardiver that already deal fire damage, I thought I remember reading somewhere that jump is powered by wind aether but I can't find the source right now.

MCH's lunchbox converts the users aether to lightning-aspected aether that is stored in it to power their abilities. Several guns have lore that mentions wind and lightning aspected crystals being used in their operation.

MNK is very dependent on aether and obviously would use wind for tornado kick and howling fist and the now-dead fists of wind. Fire and earth aether for the other fists. And rising phoenix is specifically stated to deal fire damage.

SAM's yukikaze appears ice aspected and is named as such while midare has has ice grow underneath you while casting it that breaks and scatters when finishing to represent yukikaze's sen and must be at least part ice-aspected as well.

GNB's lightning shot is named lightning shot despite not doing lightning damage and not being an actual gunshot owing to the fact that GNB's weapons can't shoot bullets, but the button image at least has lightning surrounding the gunblade and I'd think that from an in-universe point of view, lightning-aspected aether is used, whether provided for by the wielder or in a cartridge. You would also think that the rest of their cartridge abilities are at least partially fire-aspected as well, despite the gameplay making it all physical damage.

Crafting jobs each have a crystal type every recipe uses, then a secondary crystal that only some of the recipes use:

Carpenter - Wind, Ice
Blacksmith - Fire, Earth
Armorer - Ice, Earth
Goldsmith - Wind, Fire
Leatherworker - Earth, Wind
Weaver - Lightning, Wind
Alchemist - Water, Lightning
Culinarian - Fire, Water

Looking at the recipes, seems primary crystals are all that's needed for crafting recipe components, but the final product recipes typically require both crystals. ie One crystal to turn iron ore in to an iron bar, both crystals to turn that iron bar into a sword.

All crafters have an ability called Byregot's Blessing (Astral Lightning, god of crafters), which provides a boosted increase in quality at the cost of Inner Quiet stacks.*


Gatherer classes each currently have a god-related ability (whose elements kinda correspond with their guilds' home cities, though technically Limsa has a wind patron but it's also on the water so...):

Botanist - Nophica's Tidings - Astral Earth - increases item yield
Miner - Nald'Thal's Tidings - Umbral Fire - increases item yield
Fisher - Thaliak's Favor - Astral Water - Restores GP at the cost of Angler's Art (fishing crit) stacks.

Also, MIN and BTN have a passive trait called "Nymeia's Ward" (Umbral Water, fate goddess) which increases item and crystal yield at nodes.*


As for Astral/Umbral:

With crafters, you could see the two element combos as the primary crystal being the required actor in the synthesis, and the secondary element tempering the craft when necessary. So, kind of astral (active) and then umbral (passive)? But I don't think any NPCs or codices state this outright. Its just an observation of mine.

With gathering, the gods' have umbral/astral aspects to them if you look at the months they represent, but I'm not sure if that really conceptually effects the boons. I think the gathering ones are more about the things the gods are patrons of or their overall elements. I listed them anyway, though.


*These are just the current builds, of course. In older builds, I think crafters and gatherer's may have had more Twelve related abilities. Dunno where we'd find that info archived, though.

Friendly reminder that there are only six "proper" elements/aspects in this game's universe.
Those being: Fire / Wind / Lightning / Earth / Water / Ice

Anything outside of those is either classified as "multi-aspected" (i.e. two or more elements) or plain "unaspected" (i.e. lacking an element).

Pure light and darkness are classified as "unaspected" towards passivity and activity respectively.

I forgot about that!

My apologies & yes, most magiks/aether with jobs are based on a certain aligned element or 2.

I hope 7.0 expands before the Aether sorts beyond the elements to better understand Holy & Darkness since neither are elemental assiciated (fire, wind etc.,).

Though I am curious…regarding WHM since it’s wind, earth & water but later on becomes holy…should It be dismissed since its game mechanic or any other explanation regarding that?
