Why does the Conjurer guild fella not bat an eyelid at us raising the dead?

Obviously, there is a whole chunk of storyline about how Sylphie should not raise people from the dead. The guild master gets pretty annoyed at it.

Yes, he doesn't care that we raise people from the dead? It is supposed to be forbidden, but there we are. Resurrecting the dead.

I originally figured that maybe we were just bringing KOed people back to life (those on the brink of death), but the tooltip for Resurrection clearly states "Resurrects".

This means that we are bringing people back from the dead.

Lore-wise, why can we resurrect the dead, by Sylphie can't? Does the guildmaster have a crush on Sylphie, so he is faux bullying her?

I think it's a classic case of Gameplay and Story segregation.

We never truly raise someone from the dead (see Rhalgr's Reach or Haurchefant), but rather we just heal people that have been incapacitated rather than having died.

Don't worry too much about the tooltip, it uses terms that everyone would understand and don't care for Lore, as it's just a gameplay feature.

Haurchefant wouldn't have stayed dead if we could ressurect him.

Nybeth from Palace of the dead would have had an easier job if he could simply raise people with conjuring magic.

The issue with Sylphie wasn't about the morality of using Raise.

It was about the personal cost to someone who was using their own internal life essence to do so. It kinda defeats the purpose of Raise if you die instead.

Yeah. I always used to say that people who fainted in Final Fantasies were unconscious, not dead (it's like the Aerith and phoenix down debate in FF7 you know, why couldn't she be brought back, blablabla).

Althought the spell does say it resurrects, I don't think it literally does.

My personal take, particularly in FFXIV with what we know of how aether works, is that HP isn't your physical health but a reserve of aether that instantly heals your wounds. Reach zero HP and that's when you start taking actual injury and quickly become incapacitated, and vulnerable to actual death if a healer doesn't get some more aether into you quickly.

Quoting The Princess Bride: "There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive..."

Raise and other such spells bring you "from the brink", though most of the mechanics of it are gameplay-bound and not lore-related, at most it's a magic defibrilator to jolt someone back to consciousness, and they'd need further magical or medical help afterwards (which gameplay-related, is why you raise with critical HP, please let your healers throw you a few heals before you lose your invuln buff so you don't die in the next GCD). And as DPZ2 put it, it's not that he objects because we "can't" or "shouldn't" but because he knows Sylphie was using her own aether to use spells and the amount that Raise needed would likely kill her.

Well for one, we can't actually do it anymore since Hydaelyn's magic is spent, more telling though only the Scions and to an extent the Loporrits know what went down in Ultima Thule, and I don't think they go around exposing the lurid details of that excursion in the reports, especially not details like that one.

EDIT: Now... I misunderstood your meaning and jumped to the one true example of actual Ressurrection in the game, but excepting that exceptional exception. Raise, Verraise Ressurrection and similar spells aren't true Ressurrections so much as magic defibrillators.

There's actual necromancers in the game that confirm that actually raising people from the dead is both extremely frowned upon and also just... not very functional. 'Zombies' is the least horrifying result.

In fact, one of those necromancers is in the White Mage storyline! And another one is an actual Conjurer!
