Any tips for making Gil?

Couldn't find a board for this, so I thought to ask.

So.... gil. Been looking around online for methods on how to make it as quickly as possible, but so far, I haven't been able to find anything reliable. Most of the guides that I've found are either outdated, flat-out lie, or take 15 minutes to say something along the lines of "do the Crafting Jobs". Basically, I was wondering if anyone happened to find a method of grinding out gil that was, if not the fastest way to make it, then at least consistent.

For instance, I've been grinding the Clan Nutsy boards in Shb; the level-3 hunts give me 1,500 gil ever time, so it's a decent time sink. However, it's also pretty slow; hence, I was wondering if anyone has anything faster.

Instead here's a few tips on how NOT to make gil.
1. playing the marketboard: that's just gambling, many people will tell you it's a skill based system but in reality it's just luck and dedicating hours a day
2. minimum wage jobs: farming crystals or selling drops from old trials, very labor intensive and feels like you're working instead of enjoying a game
3. tricking people into buying your overpriced stuff on the marketboard: same idea as 1, it's a good way to burn yourself out
4. seasonal work: as the name suggests, it's seasonal only, sell food and potions and materia, very labor intensive and very easy to burn yourself out, and not sustainable.

The hard answer is that earning a fortune is a long term project, and to not burn yourself out you need to find passive ways of making gil as well as just not spending any.
For that you have either submarines, or simply not caring about gil and it being a byproduct of you trying to be self sufficient and farming everything yourself.

You're on the right track when you're looking for consistent ways to make gil but you need to expect the amounts to be small and add up over time. If you get lucky with a more lucrative item to sell, great, but you shouldn't expect to get it.

Think of it this way: if you do something that gives you 10k a day, that's 300k by the end of the month. Now if you have 10 of those somethings you do each day, that's 3 million gil by the end of the month. And some of those somethings are going to give you additional items that can be turned into even more gil.

So tips are:

1. Don't spend your gil unnecessarily. Save it for the items that you can't get through other means and that you will be using for a long time.

2. Play the game. Any content except Gold Saucer and PvP will end up rewarding gil. AFKing at the Limsa Aetheryte won't. Again, amounts look small but they start adding up when you don't spend them.

3. Always have your retainers going out on ventures. Convert what they bring back into gil. Crafting materials can be sold on the MB to crafters. Housing items can be sold to people decorating their housing or crafters desynthing for materials. Gear can be turned into your Grand Company for Seals to purchase more ventures for your retainers or crafting materials to sell to crafters. Things like Coke are very good sellers on the MB because FCs need it in large quantities for building their airship and submersible parts. Remember to keep your retainer gear up to date as it will affect yields and potential loot.

4. You hit on one of my favorites - hunts. It's not just the gil from the hunt bills, it's also the hunt currencies. Allied and Centurio Seals can be used to purchase Aetheryte tickets so you don't have to pay teleport fees. Got to the point you have more Aetheryte tickets than you need for a long time? Start buying more gear to turn into your Grand Company. Join hunt trains and go to S ranks to earn tomestones to buy gear for yourself or GC turn in, along with clusters to buy materia for self use or sale.

5. Treasure map parties - joining treasure map parties can get a decent amount of gil in a couple of hours not to mention what you'll get when you sell any loot drops you get. Make sure to take a couple of maps with you to share with the party. Sometimes they seem a bit expensive on the MB but with a good party you'll get a lot more than that back.

6. Don't spend your gil unnecessarily. It's worth repeating because it really makes a difference.

7. FATE farms - more small amounts that add up but you're also getting either GC seals (ARR/HW/SB) or bicolor gemstones (ShB/EW). Use the GC seals to buy more ventures and crafting materials. Bicolor gemstones can be used to buy a wide variety of items to sell, especially once you get to rank 3 for Shared FATEs in all zones. FATE farm parties for ShB and EW zones can frequently be found listed in Party Finder.

8. Grow shards in your apartment or FC private chambers in flowerpots. This isn't the same as the crystal farming Seiya mentioned. There are seeds you can buy on the marketboard that will grow shards that crafters use in large quantities. Using one of the Shroud topsoils will increase the number of shards you get back. Just plant the seeds then harvest the next day. Depending on which shard, yield and your local marketboard prices, it's 2000-8000 gil a day per flowerpot for just 1 minute of your time that again will add up over time.

It's not the "big deals" that make us rich (unless you're really lucky with a Night Pegasus whistle drop). It's all the little amounts that we accumulate over time. The more effort we put in, the more little amounts we get.

I'm going to lay out a secret truth.

If anybody mentions how they make money, it'll stop working.

Instead what you'll get is a series of lessons that'll teach you how to spot something for yourself that'll last until somebody else finds it.

Pretty much. Just like in real life there aren't many "get rich quick" schemes that actually work. If there were everyone would be doing them.

Sure you'll occasionally get something expensive out of a venture or a map party, but for the most part it's a matter of understanding that the passive little things that add up over time. Some roulettes and dailies here, selling some venture junk there... that, and not spending your gil the second you earn it, is how you make money long term.

Another thing not mentioned. Make sure you have the Challenge Log unlocked. The unlock quest is level 15 in Limsa, so you might have done it ages ago. It rewards you for playing the game with a lot of weekly-resetting goals. Are you doing something in the gold saucer? It will reward extra MGP. Are you crafting? Here's some bonus exp. Are you playing PvP? Extra wolf marks or PvP exp. And above all, more gil. Any task that doesnt have an immediately obvious reward will offer gil instead. All small amounts(1k-15k), but each is available weekly and it just ends up being a bonus for doing what you were always going to do already.

Beyond that, ill second hunts and maps. If you have the time to do every daily hunt mark it adds up to over 100k per day(time investment varies with mobs randomly selected). Thats in addition to the currencies you can use like Jojoya said. Thats in addition to any trains you might get in on. And a good map party can easily make hundreds of thousands of gil per hour. Again, not counting getting lucky on any rare drops you can make extra for.

And final note. If you have any resources that cap do your best not to let them. Poetics? Spend them before they hit cap. If you dont need gear, find a way to turn them into money. Either via GC tradeins, selling crafting mats, or whatever else. GC seals close to cap? Buy something to sell/use. Other then MGP, every special currency either has something you can sell, something you can use to save other currencies(ventures, aetheryte tickets), or something you can bring to your GC to use THEIR currency instead.

If you haven't already, I would suggest you unlock and start doing Doman Enclave Reconstruction. You will be able to sell (donate) items at twice the price.
For example, a used crafted gear (that you can't place on MB) sells for 500 gil through normal vendor, will be sold for 1k in the Doman Enclave (it's capped at 40k every week). I've been selling cheap and worthless materia I get from treasure maps through there. As everyone has said, it's a small thing but the amount adds up over time.

You can make big money by having max level crafters, invest on good gear, pentameld them, and craft a lot when a patch with new gear drop.
Not for me though, I'm fine with just accumulate gil slowly.

Important first note is that if you take maps with you, that its the 8man maps. You want portals, and only the 8man maps can create these (and you only need 3 people to reliably beat them).

It also depends on the number of players which value for a map is worth it, since gil rewards are always the same. They are not spreaded between players which means that if there are more who bought such map, it still piles up.

Lets say a map on average gives 20k. 4 players buying 1 map each will still generate like 80k per map to a total average of 320k. Yet with 2 players, that would only be 160k. This is why parties are such a good way for this. It will reduce the chances on rare drops though, which in some cases can be worth millions. But this is also partialy compensated because 4 players are significantly faster at beating the maps (and in the end, you spend less on maps). And with bad luck you might not get any of the rare items. The stable gil is for that reason the thing you should go for and everything else is just a bonus.

Its generaly recommended to at least gather 1 map per day. If you cant use them and are overflowing on them, just sell them. And in that case you can even decide to sell a map you arent interested in at all (ie. if you only do 90s maps, then 70 and 80 maps are worth it for selling). Its not as much as portals would generaly give, but its still a steady income. Even if you do not intent to complete any map, its still a nice daily bonus income that takes less than 5mins to obtain.

If buying them, the best day to obtain the maps is generaly when the WT restarts as this will often cause a lot of new maps to be generated which are then dumped on the market. Reselling these is often not realy worth it though as the market here can be quite unreliable (they generaly wont be worth less than 10k though, because then getting the map from the WT isnt worth it anymore and people will take the gil directly instead).

I've earned most of my money just running the content.

Dailies and greeding on dungeon drops adds up to a nice flow of gil.

I keep up with current EX content. The orchestrion drops can be some nice money on the marketboard. Down the road, the weapon drops can be desynthed for a chance at the crafting component for barding / glowy weapons (when they get implemented)

Never let your tomes cap, even when you're done spending them. Go pick up something on the vendor that can be sold for gil.

Buy Teleport vouchers to save gil. Your GC will offer them at max rank. They're also available for general use on allied seal and centurio vendors.

farm another sildihn subterrane for throne mounts and sell them. 20 minutes per run (without wipes) makes one throne (20 m gil) every 8 hours + random throne drops on top of that (another 20m each)
