Real talk; the lack of Job-specific STORY content is really hurting my excitement...

I love me some FFXIV. There are a LOT of Jobs these days, so I can imagine it's difficult to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for story content there.

But... well, I kind of think that's a huge part of the appeal of Jobs.

I was honestly pretty shocked when Shadowbringers didn't have any real Job quests, but you at least got a little epilogue. For Endwalker though, there's absolutely nothing.

It's not so much that "oh, the game is completely unplayable now". That would obviously be ridiculous. However, I WOULD say that it kind of contributes to a general feeling us "well, I guess the game is pretty much over now, roll credits". Which obviously ISN'T the case, but it kind of FEELS that way, to me anyways.

Moreover, those Job-specific storylines are what really help you CONNECT with your Job. I think that's part of the reason (among many others) that people seem to be gravitating more and more towards "the meta", because when you aren't getting that story-based RPG content for your favorite Job, you're ultimately left with little more than "a bunch of numbers". And you can ALWAYS compare numbers, and factor which job has higher numbers, and is therefore "better".

Now, I honestly don't need to learn a new ability every 2-3 levels trough a quest. It makes for a nice carrot-on-a-stick, but it's really not THAT important.

However, since Endwalker has introduced us to the idea of ARMOR that scales with your level, why not make THOSE your rewards?

Let's say you went back and added Job-quests to Shadowbringers. Maybe at level 72, you get your boots, which will level with you and scale to 80. Every two levels, you get a small progression, netting you legs, gloves, chest, and finally helm. Maybe the lvl 80 quest nets you the helm *and* weapon?

Same thing for Endwalker. Every two levels, you get boots, legs, gloves, chest, and maybe helm and weapon at 90.

I think that is FAR more exciting than simply "talking to a vendor" to acquire those.

But even if you don't offer ANY rewards at all, I still think that STORYTELLING content is really, really important. It's what makes you really feel connected to your favorite Job.

Because without that Story content, you're really just hitting a series of buttons without any greater meaning.

the reason they created the "role quests" instead was because the number of jobs was beginning to become too unwieldy to have to keep on creating content for. plus there was no need to keep checking back in with your former "trainers" as by the EW times you've far outclassed them. I'm not disappointed they're gone and that the resources are going somewhere else. Plus also keeping skills locked behind job quests is no longer a problem when you run into someone who hasn't done their job quests.

Just because we aren't their student anymore doesn't mean that we can't do things for or with them.

I get why Shadowbringers and Endwalker had to go to role quests. We weren't on the Source for them canonically for Class quests and world is ending would supersede anything that our former mentors wanted to discuss or have us help with.

I would love class quests in the future, but I'd rather quality over quantity for that type of quest so if that means we go for role quests, then I'm fine with that.

Without job-specific quests, more than half the fun of getting a new job is gone. Leveling up one job is much like leveling up any other job if there aren't job-specific quests to look forward to.
As for quality - the role quests in EW were all pretty bland and same-y, so we got neither quality or quantity with them. The ShB role quests were a bit better, but not much.

While I'd love to see some of the job NPCs come back for more, most of the stories had pretty good conclusions. I don't know what else could really be done with, for example, the dark knight, red mage, or dancer stories without feeling like it's just dragging it out.

And a few of them were getting pretty weak. Warrior kept falling back on the "Curious Gorge loses control again" crutch, white mage's Stormblood story was really a conjurer quest, and paladin.....ugh, paladins haven't really had their own story since Heavensward, and that one was pretty bad (even the quest dialogue calls Solkzagyl's scheme out as pointlessly contrived!).

So, I dunno. If they can make them actual good stories again, great, but if it's just there for the sake of being there, I'll pass.

I understand the justification that we've outclassed our trainers, but I do like the idea of at least going back to them to help them out with their work. I'd like to see more job lore content from that perspective, sure.

If that's the quality they could do for 4-5 quests, how much do you think that would affect it when it's dragged out to 17-19 sets of quests?

And I would love the job specific quests to come back, I just don't want classes who have otherwise excellent quests to suffer for it.

I agree that the job quests help you feel the job and get excited for it. For example, I wasn't really excited to play Warrior, but the job quests helped to put me into the mood of channeling an inner beast and mindlessly spamming fell cleave. But maybe they already achieved what they wanted to.

It is possible for us to meet the people from job quests again and we do. There was a small acknowledgement that I knew the person from the gunbreaker quests when I went to bozja, I've spotted them in seasonal events and in the Endwalker MSQ.

I think they could have continued many of them but there were others that they were struggling to continue. Paladin's in Heavensward for example. The one from Stormblood was better but was not much of a story. White Mage's was alright but you could see how it was just the normal maintenance of the twelveswood that the other white mages spend their lives doing. I enjoyed a lot of Warrior's but people have criticisms of how it was turned into a comedy.

On the other hand, they were able to make a lot of progress with the stories for monk, dragoon, ninja, samurai, bard, machinist, black mage, red mage, summoner, scholar, astrologian and dark knight and I enjoyed most of these a lot. They put me right into the fantasy of the job and had me doing some adventures as them which I still have fond memories of doing.

But I admit it was daunting to do so many of them. We have so many jobs now that I would just put off the job quests until the expansion was nearly over unless I played them.

Its the same reason SWTOR moved into faction unique stories and then into a single unique story for both sides with some minor variety to it. Writing that many stories is just too much. Nothing would ever get done for other content.
