Garlean Invasion
I absolutely love FFXIV -- but as it turns out, the most frustrating thing about this game is finding information... on anything. So I'm turning to the community. :)
I've done the Imperial Invasion event twice, and saw it through to the end each time, but both times once the Garlean Forces withdrew, the Militia Outrider NPC and her Chocobo would disappear and I was award no achievements or a chest or anything. Is this how it's suppose to work or am I doing something?

You have to speak to the outrider NPC first in order to "join" the invasion event. Otherwise, it won't count as completed for you, and you can't open the chest at the end.
There are no in-game achievements for Imperial Invasions, only Lodestone History entries, which can sometimes take awhile to show up. The chest usually gives you some potions and deaspected crystals.
The NPC disappears when the event is over, but there are usually several "rounds" to an invasion. There's about 15mins (I think) in-between rounds.

Yeah, I talked to her already and got the 'bound by duty' message.
And ahh, didn't realize there were multiple rounds.. How many are there usually? I just finished my second on not too long ago, and just headed back to Ul'Dah.

Not sure how many rounds there are. But you can tell if there will be another one or not if the Invasion NPC is still shouting in Ul'dah or not. He's the guy who stands by the water fountain outside the adventurer's guild. If he's not there, the event is over.

Oh okay, thanks a lot. :)

If you don't kill enough imperials before they withdraw, you won't get a reward. It's meant to be done with multiple people, but I don't think anyone's interested in it anymore.

Actually it's quite a good way of topping up your supplies of elixirs and the maddening potions from the chests are pretty useful for tanking.
