I thought cash shop funds were supposed to go back into development

Imagine how bad things would be today if that didn't happen!

This is a pure copium statement from tribalism aspect of the FFXIV because having such an extensive cash shop in a subscription MMO was always a key criticism from portions of the WoW player base for years (that also criticised Blizzard for doing the same thing). This game is literally the soulless cash cow of Square Enix and the money is absolutely not going back into the game to the extent that some people like to claim it is. Alternatively there's some real idiots on the dev team that can't develop their way out of a wet paper bag looking at how janky some parts of this game still are.

I always like to look at it as glass half full. All the cash shop money goes into the game. But they never claimed sub money goes into the game, which could be zero. So with out the cash shop this game would have negative revenue, fun times. And the sacred dev team would have told the truth.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I very well could be, but I seem to recall a Q&A with Yoshida-san himself saying that the subscription prices could have gone down long ago but they decided to keep them as they are because it allows them to do more stuff for the game?

I'm pretty sure that was something he was forced to say by SE. As content has become extremely slow to come out, even pre-Covid and the quality outside MSQ is and was abysmal. Relic weapons and armor, the relic quest line feeling unfinished, etc. Etc.
I love this game with all my heart but it honestly feels like we get betrayed more and more when "fixes" come in and make things worse each time. Look at housing right now, it's far worse, now people are making fake FC's to get a better chance AND the lottery was busted from the start.

I don't recall anyone at SE saying cash shop money went back to development. YoshiP said it was it's own thing not even tied to the game devs.

He claimed the cash shop has paid for server upgrades that SE wouldn't approve funding for.
