Monk: From best to worst

I hope I am not alone in this sentiment, but I have played monk from ARR through ShB, and it used to be my favorite class, but after these awful EW changes, I can firmly state I hate it now.

Its quite literally taken my favorite class and turned it into my least favorite.
The addition of the Nadu's and requirement to do bad rotations after YEARS of muscle memory is not only jarring but counter-intuitive to the class. Its taken a class that once had a good flow and pacing and ruined it by locking a burst rotation behind a buff that needs three combos to even pull off completely, when the buff only has two charges. Not to mention the terrible requirement to do 1-1-1, 1-2-3 to get the Nadu.

I've never ever had a problem playing monk prior, always maintained full uptime on the Twin snake's buff and Demolition's DoT, but now I am dropping them left and right just to try and fulfil this arbitrary burst window.

The class itself now feels slow, like I am running through molasses just to try and play it, not to even mention that thunderclap feels AWFUL compared to shoulder tackle. The latter had weight to it, good feel and sound, thunderclap has next to no weight, no audio behind it, and is honestly boring. I'd personally rather a dash that deals damage, and is fun to use than some lame fake teleport that is just a dash without any real animation or sound behind it. "but you can use it to get to allies" yeah and? I'd much rather WALK out of the bad and dash back in dealing damage with a move that is fun. not to mention the lack of skill expression.

Overall I just hate this class anymore, which is so infuriating to me after I have spent so many years playing it.

I would rather play ARR Monk, WITH TP than whatever garbage its become in EW.

It’s okay to stop enjoying something because of the direction they take a job. I, personally, find it overwhelming to manage but part of that is because it’s operating at a level I’m not used to. As someone who has always enjoyed something about monk (aside from that time they thought it would be fun to make Riddle of Fire slow down your GCD, that might have been my least favorite) I can completely understand where you’re coming from, aside from the feeling slow. It hasn’t changed too much from SHB to now in terms of GCD speed and has more OGCDs and is far more active as a job than most others. Sure it’s not STB levels of insanity with your chakras filling like crazy, but I don’t see how you can feel it’s slower.

Perhaps playing a different job and taking a break from it might do you some good to appreciate what it has. Because currently I find current monk, at the very least, the most active class below 70. I now exclusively play tank or it in any roulette where I’ll be synched and I think we should talk about how much we appreciate that. Hell I’ll go make a post about that right now.

It has objectively gotten slower, or less busy. Positionals weren't something that could be accurately quantified by CPM but they contributed heavily to MNK's business and now they only have two to work with on top of having less oGCDs to use in and out of burst. Speaking of, in terms of CPM MNK is the 2nd lowest of the melee DPS and is barely outdoing AST, a healer. It's not even the "speed job" anymore, it just has an accelerated pace.

I completely agree with you about monk's current iteration. They dumbed it down because that's what a bunch of people that won't stay with the class wanted, probably just so it's easier to level it to cap and forget about it for the expansion. Then not only do those people drop it after level capping it, but also monk mains leave the class. Ever since they gutted it in ShB and even more in EW, I have barely played the game. I used to love playing monk, even in lower level content, but now it's just a shell of it's former self and easily one of the least played classes. Unfortunately they have their sights set on DRG and AST next. This pruning/gutting really needs to stop. I really want to give this company money, but seeing how they treat these classes and loyal players it's just difficult to justify. My wife, my friends, and myself have all left the game because of this dumbing down of the game and gutting of classes.

You are making up problems that don't exist. There is no "arbitrary burst". There are no "wrong rotations" either.

You need three different chakras to open a solar nadi. This means that you keep doing your normal rotation alternating forms.

You need three of the same chakra to open a lunar nadi. This means that you use Dragon Kick and Bootshine because they have the highest potency. This is exactly the same as ShB Perfect Balance.

You're not entirely wrong, but it's also not that simple either, especially since at the two minute windows you're doing a 1-1-1 rotation to get phantom rush followed by a 1-2-3 or 2-1-3 or 3-2-1 or whatever combo to get rising phoenix. It's that second one you have to actually be more attentive about to make sure that your twin snakes and demolish stay up, which either or both could be wearing off due to just having one 4 GCDs without hitting a 2 or a 3 move in your rotation to refresh either one.

It's the only part of the job that's a little more thinking, and I'll admit can make things a bit awkward compared to how direct and smooth the rotation of monk was before this expansion. But it's also not terribly hard to get once you're used to watching your cooldowns. Though I so still think that the disciplined fist buff duration should be moved to our job gauge in place of the old greased lightning indicator to make this a little easier to track.

I feel the pain of the OP but ironiclly not because of monk which ive currently mainly been playing but specifically only with how ninja 90 game play changed for the worst for me in 6.0 with raiju ready breaking with other weapon skills which seemed to contrast with the muscle memory ive built up with the previous 89 lvls. Ironically this drove me to try other melees so I just picked back up monk (currently lvl 79)and I've been kinda enjoying it so far but I dont really have any previous monk experience before now to compare it too though.
