I have often looked at my large and asked myself "What is the point of this door?" We have a widow's walk we can't decorate, and that also vexes me to no end, but maybe adding a second layer balcony would be pretty sweet? Or maybe making that door removable? I'm just tossing ideas out. You guys do a great job, but I still have question.
Reminds me of the house I grew up in, part-time, as a kid.
On the east side of the house, at the level of the second floor, there was a door that couldn't be accessed from the inside, and there being no stairs, obviously couldn't be accessed from the outside. Apparently, some time back in the sixties or seventies, there used to be a "back staircase" there, which was removed for whatever reason in favor of a side staircase with a balcony.
Whichever geniuses did the work removed the stairs, built a wall over the door on the inside, and just left it like that.
What a weird journey back forty years to when I was a little kid. I used to stare up at that door and think the same exact thing. "What's the point of that door?!" Being four, five years old, I didn't really get that some laborer or laborers had just been really, really lazy, and/or my grandparents just really didn't care to pay to have it hidden.
The balcony door on the second story of a house in the residential area is a carry over from the very early development days of housing in game in FF14.
When housing was announced, that door was functional from the inside/outside, as in one could enter the housing from the ground door, go up to the second story, then exit via that door onto the balcony............ in theory.
In practice, it caused major issues with the housing servers, so much so, it had to be disabled.
I can't find the post that mentioned all this, which had also some pre-release images that showed the glowing clicky thingy to use a door on that balcony door.
Anyway, that "issue" is also the reason the game doesn't let you "look" in/out the windows and why apartments don't have a balcony/window-box.
I'm assuming you're referring to the door on the top floor of a mansion since your image is of an exterior Welcome sign.
In early development before housing was released, it was intended to be a working exit similar to the door below but they ran into issues and had to scrap the function. At the 2019 EU FanFest, a question about the door was asked and it led YoshiP to discuss some housing related technology they had in development that might allow the door to be used in the future, though of course no promises were made and there's been no mention since.
There are a lot of options players would like to have for the "built-in" interior wall fixtures (that door, the pillars, etc.) but I'm not sure that's possible with current housing design. Still, it never hurts to ask.
